How to Install the 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 161LR or 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe wrench, Hotstick, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Cable knife, Suitable sensing device (for 162LR voltage test)
Supplies needed:
161LR/162LR Elbow Connector Kit (housing, lug, probe, lubricant), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper ground wire, Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Silicone lubricant (for test point cap, 162LR only)
- Perform Initial Checks and Ensure Safety
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Inspect all kit contents for completeness and damage. Verify proper fit with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Refer to the full instructions for specific cable types (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, jacketed copper tape shield) to remove the outer jacket and insulation shield to the specified lengths (e.g., 9-5/8" (240mm) for jacketed cables, 7-1/8" (180mm) for copper tape shield). Remove 2-1/8" (55mm) of insulation and shield from the cable end, taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8" (175mm) back from the lug. Bevel the insulation end 1/8" (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.
- Ground the Elbow and Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, being careful not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, follow its specific instructions.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Operate the connection using a full insulated hotstick type tool; DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Securely fasten the hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock.
- Perform Voltage Test (162LR Only)
If using a 162LR connector with an integral capacitance test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean the inside surface of the cap, lubricate with silicone lubricant, and replace it on the test point.
