Overview

The ABB 162LR-B-2220 is a 15kV, 200 Amp loadbreak elbow connector engineered for medium-voltage power distribution systems. This connector is part of the ABB 162LR series, designed to provide reliable, load-interruptible connections in industrial and utility applications. The built-in test point enables safe voltage verification without de-energizing the circuit, enhancing operational safety and reducing maintenance downtime. Key specifications include a voltage rating of 15 kV and a continuous current rating of 200 A, making it suitable for medium-voltage distribution networks. The connector accommodates cable insulation diameters ranging from 0.635 inches to 0.905 inches, ensuring compatibility with common medium-voltage cable sizes. It is designed for #2 AWG stranded copper conductors, providing a secure connection via a copper compression lug. The loadbreak feature allows for safe connection and disconnection under load, minimizing electrical arcing and system interruptions. The integrated test point provides a non-intrusive method for verifying the absence of voltage before maintenance or modifications, reducing the risk of arc flash incidents. The compression lug design ensures low-resistance, high-conductivity connections, which are critical for maintaining system efficiency and reliability. This connector is ideal for applications in power distribution substations, switchgear, and industrial facilities where medium-voltage connections are required. For proper selection, refer to the ABB catalog for insulation diameter and conductor size compatibility. The catalog number follows a structured format: 162LR-W5X, where 'W' represents the insulation diameter code (B for 0.635"-0.905") and 'X' represents the compression lug code for #2 AWG copper conductors.

How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial connection of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on various UD cables.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable cutting tool, Cable stripping tool, Wire brush, Crimp tool (refer to lug chart), Probe wrench, Hotstick (full insulated), Vinyl tape

Supplies needed:

161LR or 162LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), UD Cable, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) for grounding, Appropriate connector (for neutral to ground), 200ECS, 200ECS-G1, G2, or G3 sealing kit (optional), Conductive copper tape (if using 200ECS-G2/G3 kit), Insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if shipping covers removed), Silicone lubricant (for 162LR test point cap)

  1. Perform Initial Checks and Cable Training

Before starting, inspect all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility. Check the package contents to ensure completeness. Thread the probe into the compression lug to verify smooth operation. Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation, typically 24-36 inches (610-914mm) beyond the bushing centerline. Manage neutral or drain wires according to your cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric, or jacketed with drain wires) and cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline.

  2. Prepare Cable and Install Compression Lug

Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the cable shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors thoroughly and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the diagram, and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all dirt or inhibitor traces.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Liberally lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may damage the product. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion until it is fully seated. Wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  4. Ground the Elbow Connector

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to the ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, follow the instructions provided with that kit.

  5. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a full insulated 'hotstick' type tool to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
