How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Cable stripping tools, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick, Cleaning supplies

Supplies needed:

161LR or 162LR Elbow Connector Kit (includes housing, compression lug, probe, probe wrench, lubricant), UD cable (specific type), Separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Vinyl tape (if applicable), Conductive copper tape (if applicable), Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Cleaning solution/wipes

  1. Prepare the Cable (Type-Specific)

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Train the cable to ensure adequate slack. Based on your cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions in the product manual to remove the outer jacket and/or shield, prepare neutral or drain wires, and cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline.

  2. Prepare Conductor and Insulation

Remove 2-1/8" (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore and crimp according to the lug's instructions. Remove the insulation shield as specified (6-7/8" or 175mm back), bevel the insulation end (1/8" or 5mm max), and thoroughly clean the insulation.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  4. Grounding and Neutral Connection

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation.

  5. Connect Elbow to Bushing

DANGER: CONFIRM THAT TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Do not operate by hand. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2" (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock.
