How to Install the 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides comprehensive instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, covering cable preparation, assembly, grounding, and connection to a de-energized bushing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Utility knife or cable cutting tool, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent, Appropriate connector (for neutral wires), Vinyl tape (if applicable for cable type), Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using sealing kit), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)

  1. Ensure De-energized State and Inspect Components

Before beginning, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility. Check package contents for completeness and verify fit with cable/mating products. Thread probe into compression lug by hand to check for resistance; replace if damaged. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness.

  2. Prepare Cable for Initial Termination

Train cable for slack. Cut excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Based on your cable type (concentric neutral, jacketed, drain wires, or copper tape shield), follow the document's specific instructions for removing the outer jacket and/or copper tape shield, and for unwrapping/binding neutral/drain wires. If using a sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first.

  3. Perform Detailed Cable Preparation

Remove insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from cable end, cutting squarely without nicks. Wire brush aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate lug to spread inhibitor, aligning threaded hole with bushing bore. Crimp lug per chart, starting at crimp line, rotating 180 degrees each crimp. Wipe excess inhibitor. Remove insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) back, ensuring a straight, smooth, squared cut. Bevel insulation end max 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean insulation.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate cable insulation and inside elbow housing with supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Keep insulation clean. Slide elbow connector onto cable with a twisting motion, then wipe off excess lubricant. Align elbow with compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread probe into lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for ~4 turns before snugging. Tighten probe with supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Ground the Elbow and Neutral Wires

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions to complete this step.

  6. Connect Elbow to De-energized Bushing

CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Carefully insert the elbow connector onto the bushing. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND; use the hotstick for all connections.

  7. Perform Voltage Test (for 162LR with Test Point)

If your 162LR has a test point, use it to determine if the circuit is energized. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling at an angle. WARNING: This is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment; follow your sensing device's directions. Treat elbow as energized until 'no voltage' is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean cap, lubricate with silicone, and replace.
