Overview

The ABB 162LR-A-5250 Loadbreak Elbow Connector is a 15kV, 200A-rated medium-voltage cable accessory designed for reliable, hot-stick operation in industrial and utility applications. This bi-metal compression lug connector supports cable insulation diameters from 0.575 to 0.740 inches and accommodates 2/0 AWG stranded wire, ensuring compatibility with standard medium-voltage cables. The loadbreak design enables safe disconnection under load, minimizing downtime during maintenance or reconfiguration without interrupting service. An integrated test point allows for quick voltage verification without system disconnection, enhancing operational efficiency and safety. The bi-metal construction provides superior corrosion resistance and long-term performance in harsh environments, including underground distribution systems, switchgear, and pad-mounted transformers. The compression lug delivers a secure, gas-tight connection that resists vibration and thermal cycling, reducing fault risks. This connector is part of the 162LR-A series, optimized for medium-voltage applications where reliability and durability are critical. The catalog number follows ABB's structured selection process, with insulation diameter code 'A' (0.575–0.740") and conductor size code '5' for bi-metal compression lugs supporting 2/0 stranded wire.

How to Install Elastimold 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and preparation of Elastimold 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, lug installation, elbow assembly, and grounding.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Cable cutting tools, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick

Supplies needed:

UD cable, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Neutral wire connector, Vinyl tape, Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kits), Conductive copper tape (if using specific sealing kits)

  1. Prepare Cable for Termination

Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for operation. Refer to the specific instructions in the product manual (IS-1378) for your cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield) to cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline and prepare the neutral or ground wires. This includes removing the outer jacket, unwrapping and binding neutral/drain wires, or applying conductive copper tape as required.

  2. Prepare Conductor and Install Compression Lug

Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8” (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor and align its threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug following the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Wipe off excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  3. Prepare Insulation Shield

Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8” (175mm) from the cable end, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared cut without nicking the insulation. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8” (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Ground the Elbow

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.

  6. Connect Elbow to Bushing

DANGER: Confirm that both the transformer and the elbow are de-energized before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2” (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. Do not operate by hand.
