How to Install 755/775LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 755LR and 775LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for 35kV class systems to provide fully shielded, fully submersible deadfront cable connections.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Utility knife, Measuring tape or ruler, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Crimping tool (with appropriate dies), Hotstick, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points, Torque wrench
Supplies needed:
755LR or 775LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector Kit (includes Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Lubricant, Stud Prepack), High voltage cable (compatible with 35kV class systems), Mating apparatus or connector (e.g., bushing, elbow tap plug), Grounding device (e.g., 20MA, 21MA, 600ECS Jacket Cable Seal, or 10TL cable shield adapter, if applicable), Grounding wire (minimum No. 14 AWG Copper), Suitable connector for grounding wire, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Vinyl tape (if preparing flat metallic tape shield cable)
- Ensure Safety and Inspect Components
DANGER: De-energize all apparatus in the work area before beginning installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts from the connector kit and mating products for any damage, verify their ratings, and ensure compatibility with the cable and mating parts. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Position Cable and Make Initial Cut
Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack is available to allow adequate clearance for removing the elbows. If using concentric neutral cable, unwind the concentric neutral wires. Measure and cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.
- Clean Cable Outer Jacket
Thoroughly clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) from the cut end.
- Prepare Cable According to Type
Follow the specific cable preparation instructions based on your cable type. If using a 20MA or 21MA grounding device or 600ECS Jacket Cable Seal, refer to their respective installation instructions. For UNISHIELD* or LEAD SHEATH cable, refer to the 10TL cable shield adapter instructions. For jacketed and non-jacketed cables, remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable insulation and semi-con shield to the specified dimensions (10-3/8 inches, 11-3/8 inches, and 13-5/8 inches from the mating product centerline for the tape marker, semi-con shield, and cable insulation respectively).
- Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, always working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare Conductor Length
Carefully remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. WARNING: Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. Verify that the length of the exposed conductor is between 4-3/8 inches to 4-3/4 inches (111mm-121mm). If the length is outside this range, redo the assembly.
- Install Compression Lug
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping; it should be less than 7 inches (178mm). If not, redo the assembly. Crimp the compression lug following the crimping instructions supplied with the lug. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the compression lug and cable adapter surface after crimping. Verify the distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter after crimping is between 6-7/8 inches to 7-5/8 inches (175mm-194mm). If not, redo the assembly.
- Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Prepare Mating Products for Connection
WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. DO NOT ENERGIZE WHILE DISCONNECTED. Remove any protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud supplied with the elbow into the mating part. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, ensuring surfaces remain clean.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Part
Push the elbow onto the mating part, carefully lining up the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.
- Connect Opposite End of Elbow (if applicable)
If connecting to another mating part on the opposite end of the elbow, clean and lubricate its mating surface. Insert the mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to the instructions supplied with that specific mating part.
- Install Insulating Plug (if used)
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap on the elbow and push down firmly until it snaps into place.
- Ground the Cable Shield
Insert one end of a piece of wire, with an ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper, through the grounding eye and twist to create a small loop. Do not damage the grounding eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The shield of the cable must be grounded; ground it according to the instructions supplied with your grounding device, or through an alternate approved method if no grounding device is used. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Voltage Test (Optional but Recommended)
CAUTION: When constructing 600amp L-Kits, ensure each component is tightened to the specified torque per the plug connector instructions. To perform a voltage test, remove the test point cap with a hotstick by peeling it off at an angle, rather than pulling directly. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device specifically designed for separable connectors with capacitive test points, following the manufacturer's directions. Contamination, moisture, or dirt around the test point, or using incorrect equipment, can lead to a false 'no voltage' indication. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
