How to Install 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, assembly, grounding, and initial connection to a bushing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutters, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Cleaning cloth, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
162LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), UD Cable, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate neutral connector, Vinyl tape (if using drain wires), Conductive copper tape (if using copper tape shield cable), Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit)
- Ensure Safety and Inspect Components
Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Inspect all package contents and components for completeness, damage, rating, and proper fit with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading it into the compression lug; replace any damaged component if resistance is encountered prior to full assembly.
- Prepare the Cable Ends
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for ease of operation. Depending on the cable type, prepare neutral or drain wires by unwrapping and binding them back, or wrapping with conductive copper tape. Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Remove the outer jacket (if applicable). Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) back from the cable end. Bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Install the Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately after stripping. Install the compression lug, ensuring the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart packaged with the compression lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble the Elbow Housing and Probe
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants as they may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Grounding and Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, being careful not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Bushing
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding with this step. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
