How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and assembly of 161LR (without test point) and 162LR (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed to terminate various UD cables to 15kV class loadbreak bushings.
Estimated time: 1h 45m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick (for operation)
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (supplied), Compression lug (supplied), Probe (supplied), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent, Vinyl tape (if applicable), Conductive copper tape (if applicable), Cold shrink tube (if applicable)
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Prepare Workspace
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating components. Ensure the package contents are complete and undamaged. Check all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Read the entire installation instructions before starting and have all required tools at hand, maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Train and Prepare the Cable Shield
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for ease of operation. Based on your cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions in the document (Step 1 A, B, C, or D) to prepare the cable. This includes pulling extra cable, binding neutrals, removing outer jackets, unwrapping ground wires, and applying sealing kits if required. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing.
- Prepare Conductor and Insulation
Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Refer to the crimp chart with the lug for tool information, starting crimp at the mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the diagram, beveling the insulation end 1/8 inch (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Ground the Elbow Connector
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. If the elbow is preordered with a ground wire, proceed to the next step. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its supplied instructions.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Operate the connection using a full insulated 'hotstick' type tool; DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Securely fasten the hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock.
