How to Install 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe and proper installation of 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on UD jacketed and non-jacketed cables, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection to a deadbreak bushing or accessory device.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wrench, Hot stick, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Suitable sensing device (for voltage test)
Supplies needed:
252LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant (supplied), Hold-down Bail, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper Wire, Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using 200ECS-G2 kit), Vinyl tape (if applicable), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)
- Perform Initial Checks and Ensure Safety
Read the entire installation instruction before starting. Check package contents for completeness and damage. Verify elbow housing cable entrance and compression lug size for proper cable fit. Check probe threads by hand-threading into the lug. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal. Do not touch or move energized products. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack. Depending on cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), prepare the neutral wires or shield as specified in the documentation, ensuring proper length for grounding. Cut the cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. If using a sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable.
- Prepare Cable End and Crimp Lug
Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of shield and insulation from the cable end, taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Place the compression lug over the conductor, rotate to spread inhibitor, and align the contact threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off excess inhibitor. Remove insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) from the lug, beveling the insulation end 1/8 inch (5mm) max. Thoroughly clean the insulation.
- Assemble the Elbow Housing
Clean the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing, then lubricate with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral Wires
Place the hold-down bail in the hold-down bracket. Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, then lubricate with the supplied lubricant. Lubricate only if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing. Do not operate by hand. Do not separate if energized.
- Secure the Elbow with the Bail
Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt in a clockwise direction. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator. The nut should act as a stop to prevent excessive force on the elbow.
- Perform Voltage Test (Optional Verification)
If equipped with a capacitance test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable sensing device, made for use with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean the cap, lubricate, and replace it on the test point.
