How to Install 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
A comprehensive guide for the safe installation and initial connection of 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding procedures.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Hotstick tool, Wire brush, Crimp tool (specific to compression lug), Wire strippers, Vinyl tape (optional, depending on cable type)
Supplies needed:
262LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied with kit), Copper ground wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Grounding connector (for neutral wires), Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using 200ECS-G2 kit)
- Safety First: De-energize and Inspect
DANGER: Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating components. Read all instructions thoroughly and have all required tools and supplies ready. Maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Refer to the specific cable type section (Non-Jacketed Concentric Neutral, Jacketed Concentric Neutral, Jacketed Cable with Drain Wires, or Jacketed Copper Tape Shield) in the documentation for precise jacket and shield removal dimensions. Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Manage neutral or ground wires as specified for your cable type, ensuring extra length for connection to tank ground or using a jumper/braid. If using a sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable now.
- Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug
Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor from the lug and cable.
- Remove Insulation Shield and Clean
Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) from the cable end, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared cut. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful to the product. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Ground the Elbow and Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions for completion.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing (De-energized)
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Remove the insulated cap from the bushing using a hotstick tool. Securely fasten the hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. With positive control, insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, applying sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
