How to Install the 10EP Elbow Cable Entrance Insulating Plug

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 10EP Elbow Cable Entrance Insulating Plug onto an Elastimold 200amp Deadbreak or Loadbreak elbow, including lubrication, connection procedures, and voltage testing. All apparatus must be de-energized during installation.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Pliers, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)

Supplies needed:

Elbow Cable Entrance Insulating Plug, Lubricant, Male contact, Protective cap, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm2) copper wire, Silicone grease

  1. De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Parts

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts before proceeding. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices.

  2. Lubricate the Insulating Plug

Lightly lubricate the surface of the insulating plug with the supplied lubricant or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant for approximately 4-1/2 inches from the second chamfered step. Do not substitute lubricants, as others may harm the product or its mating product(s).

  3. Position and Insert the Insulating Plug

Position the insulating plug so its flat contact area faces the receptacle end of the elbow connector. Slide the 10EP into the elbow connector until it stops. Verify the threaded hole in the 10EP is aligned to accept the male contact; if not, use pliers on the exposed end of the 10EP to rotate it into position.

  4. Install and Hand Tighten the Male Contact

Remove the protective cap from the threads of the male contact. Insert the threaded end of the male contact into the threaded hole of the insulating plug, located in the receptacle end of the elbow. Hand tighten this contact, ensuring not to overtighten to avoid stripping threads.

  5. Complete Assembly and Ground the Elbow

Lightly lubricate both the bushing and elbow connector mating surfaces. Complete the assembly as per the elbow's specific instructions. Ground the elbow by connecting a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm2) copper wire from the apparatus ground to the elbow grounding eye.

  6. Remove Test Point Cap

Using a hotstick, remove the test point cap. Peel it off at an angle, rather than pulling directly in line with the test point assembly.

  7. Perform Voltage Test

WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points, following its manufacturer's directions, to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or incorrect equipment can cause false readings.

  8. Replace Test Point Cap

After completing voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the test point cap with silicone grease, then replace it securely on the test point.
