How to Install the 1601DLA Deadbreak to Loadbreak Adapter
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 1601DLA or 2701DLA Deadbreak to Loadbreak Adapter, converting 180 series deadbreak epoxy bushings to loadbreak bushings. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Screwdriver
Supplies needed:
1601DLA or 2701DLA Adapter, Bail Prepack (4 Hook Bolts, 4 Wing Nuts, 1 Bail Plate), Silicone Lubricant, Nylon Rod, Wire (No. 14 AWG Copper or equivalent), Suitable ground connector, Mating product (Elbow connector, insulated cap, or grounding elbow)
- Prepare Bushing and Install Adapter
Inspect the apparatus bushing to ensure it is dry and free from all contaminants. Remove the protective shipping cover from the adapter. Lubricate the apparatus bushing and adapter interface with the supplied lubricant or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricants; do not substitute. Insert the nylon rod into the adapter interface to exhaust trapped air during assembly. Push the adapter firmly onto the apparatus bushing.
- Remove Nylon Rod
Remove the nylon rod from the adapter by pulling it in the direction shown in the instructions (away from the adapter).
- Connect Ground Wire
Insert one end of a piece of wire, with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper, through the grounding eye and twist it to make a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector.
- Assemble and Secure Bail Plate
Assemble the bail plate, four hook bolts, and four wing nuts to securely hold the adapter in place. Hand tighten the wing nuts, ensuring the bail plate remains parallel to the bushing mounting surface. The bail plate and hook bolts also serve as a ground for the adapter's semi-conductive jacket.
- Prepare Loadbreak Interface and Install Mating Product
Clean and lubricate the loadbreak interface with the supplied lubricant. Install the mating products (e.g., elbow connector, insulated cap, or grounding elbow) to the bushing interface, following their specific installation instructions. If the adapter loadbreak interface is not immediately mated, replace the protective cap. Do NOT energize or submerge the adapter with the protective cap on.
- Verify Complete Assembly
Confirm that the assembly of an insulated cap or elbow is complete by ensuring no portion of the red (for 1601DLA) or blue (for 2701DLA) interface sleeve is visible when viewed from the side.
