How to Install the 164FT-SS Feed-Thru/Grounding Device
Instructions for installing the 164FT-SS feed-thru device as either a junction point or a grounding point.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Hotstick, Voltage detection device, Live-line tool
Supplies needed:
Ground lead (No. 14 copper wire or equivalent), Lubricant (supplied), Loadbreak elbow, Grounding elbow, Insulated cap
- Prepare Ground Connection
Insert the ground lead into the grounding lug on the mounting hardware and tighten. Connect the other end of the lead to ground, ensuring enough slack for operation with a hotstick. Use No. 14 copper wire or equivalent.
- Prepare Feed-Thru Bushings
Remove the protective caps from the feed-thru bushings. Clean the bushing surfaces and lubricate them with the supplied lubricant. Do not substitute lubricants. Replace protective caps if the feed-thru is not in use.
- Attach Feed-Thru to Hotstick
Firmly attach the feed-thru eye to the hotstick.
- Mount Feed-Thru on Parking Stand
Using the hotstick, slide the feed-thru onto the parking stand. Unlock the hotstick and back it off to allow space for the eyebolt to be tightened. Tighten the eyebolt by rotating the hotstick clockwise until snug. Do not overtighten. Release the hotstick.
- Connect First Loadbreak Elbow (Junction Point Application)
Remove a loadbreak elbow from its apparatus loadbreak bushing. Using a hotstick firmly attached to the elbow, insert the probe tip into one feed-thru bushing until slight resistance is felt. Push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock.
- Connect Second Loadbreak Elbow (Junction Point Application)
Remove a second loadbreak elbow. Using a hotstick firmly attached to the elbow, insert the probe tip into the remaining feed-thru bushing until slight resistance is felt. Push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock.
- Disconnect Loadbreak Elbows (Junction Point Application)
To disconnect, ensure no system faults exist. Reverse the operational sequence, following the applicable loadbreak operating instructions, to return the loadbreak elbow(s) to the apparatus bushing(s).
- Verify System De-energization (Grounding Point Application)
Ensure the system is de-energized. Check the capacitive test point on the loadbreak elbow with an appropriate voltage detection device, or use a test rod and a meter capable of reading system voltage to check the test rod disc. If voltage is indicated, do not proceed without de-energizing the system. Keep the hotstick eye and test rod disc clear from ground until tested de-energized.
- Install Grounding Elbow (Grounding Point Application)
Install the ground elbow into the second plug of the feed-thru, following the grounding elbow operating instructions. IMPORTANT: Do not insert the grounding elbow unless the circuit has been tested 'De-Energized'.
- Verify Full Elbow Seating
Confirm that the elbow is fully seated by observing that no portion of the yellow band is visible when viewed from the side.
