This guide provides detailed instructions for preparing wires, crimping 0.64-mm square contacts, and assembling them into housings. It also covers proper housing configuration and wire management.

Locking Clip 0.64-mm Square Contacts (e.g., 87124), Housings (various types), Discrete solid-conductor or stranded wire (AWG 30-20), Keying Plugs 87179 (optional), Cable ties (optional), Fixed clamps (optional)
- Prepare Wire for Crimping
Strip the insulation from the wire according to the dimensions specified in Figure 2 of the application specification. For AWG 20, strip 3.96 mm. For AWG 26-22, strip 3.96 mm. For AWG 30-28, strip 3.81 mm. Ensure the insulation diameter is within the recommended range for your wire size.
- Crimp Contact to Wire
Select the appropriate hand crimping tool (e.g., 90295-1 for AWG 30-28, 90289-1 for AWG 26-22, 90431-1 for AWG 24-20). Place the stripped wire into the contact's wire barrel and crimp. CAUTION: DO NOT crimp insulation in the wire barrel. Ensure the wire conductor is flush with or slightly extended from the front of the wire barrel, and both insulation and conductor are visible between the insulation and wire barrels.
- Inspect Crimped Contact Quality
Visually inspect the crimped contact. Verify the wire barrel seam is completely closed with no loose strands. Check for proper front and rear bellmouths. Ensure the effective crimp length is achieved and the contact has no excessive vertical or horizontal bending (max 3 degrees) or twist/roll (max 5 degrees). Confirm the locking lance is not deformed or damaged. CAUTION: DO NOT cut or break the insulation while crimping contact.
- Install Keying Plugs (Optional)
If specific polarization is required, insert Keying Plug 87179 into the desired contact cavity of the housing. Ensure the latch of the keying plug is oriented with the extraction slot cavity. The plug can be removed later using an extraction tool.
- Load Crimped Contacts into Housing
Carefully insert the crimped contacts into the designated cavities of the housing. Ensure the contact's locking lance fully engages with the housing to secure the contact firmly in place. Verify each contact is properly seated.
- Configure Housing Stacking (Optional)
If stacking multiple housings, use right end open housings (with a key) to stack to the left, and left end open housings (with a keyway) to stack to the right. Align the keys with keyways to maintain 2.54 mm centerline spacing on the PC board. Note: Single-row housings cannot be stacked with double-row housings.
- Apply Wire Strain Relief (Optional)
If strain relief is needed, bundle wires together using cable ties. Secure the wire bundles to a panel using fixed clamps. Ensure a minimum distance of 50.80 mm [2.00 in.] from the top of the post to the first fixed clamp. Allow slack in perpendicular wire bundles to prevent restricting the floating action of the contact in the housing.
