This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing wires, crimping AMPMODU MOD IV, IV1/2, or V receptacle contacts, and properly inserting them into compatible AMPMODU MOD IV connector housings. It also covers essential inspection criteria for ensuring reliable connections.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire Strippers, Hand Crimping Tool (or Applicator/Power Unit), Appropriate crimping dies/applicator for contact and wire size, Extraction Tool (for rework or relocation)
Supplies needed:
AMPMODU MOD IV, IV1/2, or V Receptacle Contacts, AMPMODU MOD IV Connector Housings, Insulated Wire (32-20 AWG), Keying Plugs (optional), Cable Ties (optional, for strain relief)
- Prepare the Wire
Select the appropriate wire size (32-20 AWG) and type. Carefully strip the wire insulation to the length specified in Figure 2 of the application specification, ensuring no nicks, scrapes, or cuts to the wire conductor. Refer to the table for specific strip lengths based on wire gauge and contact type.
- Crimp the Receptacle Contact
Place the prepared wire and the receptacle contact into the appropriate crimping tool (hand tool, applicator, or power unit) according to the instructions provided with the tooling. Terminate the contact, ensuring the wire insulation is not cut or broken, and the insulation is not crimped into the contact wire barrel. Exercise care to prevent damage to the wire termination.
- Inspect the Crimped Contact
Visually inspect the crimped contact against the criteria in Figures 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10 of the application specification. Verify the crimp height and length are within specifications, front and rear bellmouths are evident, the cutoff tab is visible and within dimensions, and there are no burrs or wire barrel flash exceeding limits. Ensure the insulation barrel grips the insulation firmly without cutting it, and both wire conductor and insulation are visible in the transition area. Confirm the wire barrel seam is closed with no loose strands, and there is no twist, roll, deformation, or excessive bending in the mating portion of the contact.
- Insert Crimped Contact into Housing
Carefully insert the crimped contact into the desired position within the AMPMODU MOD IV connector housing. Push the contact firmly until the locking lance fully engages the housing, securing the contact in place. Ensure the contact is properly seated and locked.
- Install Keying Plugs (Optional)
If specific positions in the housing need to be excluded from mating, install keying plugs into the open receptacle contact positions or directly into the housing as shown in Figure 8. This prevents incorrect mating.
- Secure Wires with Strain Relief/Pull Tabs (Optional)
If using AMPMODU MOD IV housings equipped with strain relief/pull tabs, secure the wires with a cable tie around the strain relief feature. This provides additional support and prevents accidental dislodgement of the wires.
