Overview

The TE Connectivity Socket Contact (SKU: 87165-1) is a precision-engineered gold-plated electrical connector designed for reliable signal transmission in industrial and electronic systems. This crimp-style socket contact supports discrete wire sizes from 26 to 22 AWG (0.12 to 0.4 mm²), with a current capacity ranging from 236.823 to 789.41 CMA. Rated for 250 VAC, it delivers consistent electrical performance with minimal contact resistance, making it ideal for applications requiring high signal integrity. Constructed from durable phosphor bronze, the contact provides excellent mechanical strength and corrosion resistance, ensuring long-term reliability in demanding environments. The gold plating enhances conductivity and reduces oxidation, critical for maintaining signal quality in telecommunications, automotive systems, and industrial control applications. This contact is part of TE Connectivity’s AMPMODU IV/V series, a trusted platform for high-density interconnect solutions. Key applications include aerospace wiring harnesses, telecommunications equipment, industrial automation, and automotive electrical systems where reliable discrete wire termination is essential. The crimp termination method ensures a secure, gas-tight connection that resists vibration and mechanical stress, reducing the risk of intermittent faults in critical circuits. With a UNSPSC code of 39121522, this contact meets industry standards for electrical connectivity and is manufactured in the USA for consistent quality control.

How to Install and Crimp TE Connectivity Locking Clip 0.64-mm Square Contacts

This guide provides instructions for preparing wires, crimping 0.64-mm square contacts, and inserting them into compatible housings. It covers essential steps for proper assembly and ensures reliable electrical connections.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Hand Crimping Tool (e.g., TE 90289-1), Extraction Tool (e.g., TE 91084-1)

Supplies needed:

TE Locking Clip 0.64-mm Square Contacts, TE Compatible Housings (single or double-row), Discrete solid-conductor or stranded wire (20-30 AWG), Keying Plugs (optional), Cable ties (optional), Fixed clamps (optional)

  1. Prepare the Wire

Strip the wire insulation according to the recommended strip lengths for your wire gauge. For 20 AWG, strip 3.96 mm; for 26-22 AWG, strip 3.96 mm; for 30-28 AWG, strip 3.81 mm. Ensure the insulation diameter is within the specified range for the contact (e.g., 1.27-2.54 mm for 20 AWG).

  2. Crimp the Contact to the Wire

Select the appropriate hand crimping tool for your wire size (e.g., TE 90289-1 for 26-22 AWG). Insert the stripped wire into the contact's wire barrel and crimp firmly. CAUTION: Do not crimp insulation in the wire barrel. Ensure the wire conductor is flush with or slightly extended from the front end of the wire barrel, and both insulation and conductor are visible between the insulation and wire barrels.

  3. Insert the Crimped Contact into the Housing

Align the crimped contact with an empty cavity in the housing. Push the contact into the cavity until the locking lance engages and secures the contact within the housing. Ensure the locking lance is not deformed and is properly latched, holding the contact firmly in place.

  4. Verify Crimp Quality and Contact Installation

Visually inspect the crimped contact. Confirm the wire barrel seam is completely closed with no loose strands, and the wire barrel flash and bellmouths are within specified limits. Ensure the contact is vertically and horizontally aligned, and there is no twist or roll. Verify the locking lance is latched and the contact is secure in the housing.

  5. Manage Strain Relief (Optional)

If required, bundle wires with cable ties and secure them to a panel with fixed clamps. Ensure wires are not confined in a way that restricts the floating action of the contact in the housing. Maintain a minimum distance of 50.80 mm from the back of the housing to the first fixed clamp for perpendicular wire bundles.
