This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Thomas & Betts Flood-Seal Street Light Fuse Kits (SLK/SDK series) for copper and aluminum conductors.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Torque wrench, Screwdriver
Supplies needed:
SLK/SDK Kit (line-end assembly, load-end assembly, 2 FSS 20 Flood-Seal Rockets, Silicone Grease), 13/32 inch cartridge fuse (for SLK kits, max 600V, non-glass)
- Ensure Safety and Identify Components
WARNING: De-energize all associated wires and the working area completely to prevent electric shock. Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable local, state, and national electrical codes, installation standards, and safety rules. Identify the line-side and load-side wires and match them with the correct housing body parts (line-end assembly, load-end assembly).
- Prepare Cable Ends and Housings
For both the line-end and load-end cables: Strip 3/4 inch of insulation from the cable end, exposing the conductor. Select the correct cut-off ring on the respective housing. Cut off the end housing at the tip of the arrow, leaving the correct cable size showing. Wipe the cable clean and pencil the end of the cable insulation for ease of installation. Apply silicone grease to the end of the cable and to the cut opening of the housing. CAUTION: Do NOT grease the sealing rings on the line-end housing.
- Insert and Secure Cables
For both the line-end and load-end cables: Insert the prepared cable into its respective housing until it extends 2 to 3 inches beyond the housing. Insert the cable into the assembly and torque the set screw to 25 in-lbs to secure the conductor.
- Install Fuse or Connecting Link (Load-End Specific)
For SLK Kits: Insert an appropriate 13/32 inch (maximum 600 Volt) cartridge fuse into the load-end assembly. Do NOT use a glass body fuse. For SDK Kits: Insert the provided connecting link into the load-end assembly in place of a fuse. Apply silicone grease to the sealing area of the load-end assembly.
- Final Assembly and Sealing
Mate the "Flood-Seal" rocket to the line-end assembly to create a watertight seal. Mate the line-end housing to the load-end housing to establish the electrical connection and complete the unit's seal.
