Comprehensive guide for the safe and correct installation of the Flood-Seal SDT 2 In-Line Fuse/Disconnect Kit. This process involves preparing cables, crimping fuse clips, and assembling the housing for a secure electrical connection.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, T & B No. WT 111M Crimp Tool, T & B No. TBM-20S Crimp Tool
Supplies needed:
Line End Housing, Load End Housing, Fuse Clips (2 or 4 depending on kit), Connecting Link (for SDK/SDT kits), Silicone Grease, Assembly Dowel, 13/32 x 1-1/2 inch Fuse (600V max, non-glass body, if not using connecting link), Copper Cable (#14-2 AWG)
- De-energize and Identify Wires
CAUTION: Identify Line and Load side wires and match housing body parts before installing. WARNING: All associated wires and working area must be de-energized to prevent electric shock. Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable codes and safety rules.
- Prepare Cable Conductors
Strip insulation from the copper cable: 3/4 inch for 14 AWG to 10 AWG, and 3/8 inch for 8 AWG to 4 AWG. Do not pencil the insulation and do not exceed the specified strip length. Bevel the end of the cable insulation for easier installation.
- Prepare Line End Housing
Select the correct cut-off ring on the Line End housing for the cable being used. Cut off the end of the housing at the tip of the arrow, ensuring the correct cable size is showing. Wipe the cable clean and apply silicone grease to the end of the cable and to the cut opening of the Line End housing.
- Insert Cable into Line End Housing
Insert the prepared cable into the Line End housing until it extends 2 to 3 inches beyond the housing.
- Prepare Load End Housing and Cable
Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the Load End housing and its corresponding cable.
- Crimp Fuse Clips onto Conductors
Crimp the fuse clip onto the conductor according to the provided chart. For certain sizes, perform 2 crimps rotated 90 degrees. Use the recommended crimp tools and dies (T & B No. WT 111M or TBM-20S).
- Insert Fuse Clips into Housings
Apply a small amount of silicone grease to the fuse clip. Slide the housing over the fuse clip until resistance is felt. Using the wood dowel as an assembly and depth gauge tool, insert the fuse clip to the depth indicated for the line and load side housings as marked on the dowel. DO NOT exceed these depths.
- Insert Connecting Link or Fuse
Insert the connecting link (for SDK/SDT kits) or the appropriate fuse into the Load End housing. Ensure you use a 13/32 inch x 1-1/2 inch fuse (600V max) and do not use a glass body fuse.
- Mate Line End and Load End Housings
Mate the Line End and Load End housings together to make the final electrical connection, ensuring they are securely joined.
