How to Install the Flood-Seal In-Line Fuse/Disconnect Kit

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the Flood-Seal In-Line Fuse/Disconnect Kit, including wire preparation, housing assembly, and fuse clip crimping for copper conductors.

Estimated time: 45m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Crimp tool (T & B No. WT 111M or TBM-20S), Utility knife, Measuring tape or ruler

Supplies needed:

Flood-Seal Line End Housing, Flood-Seal Load End Housing, Fuse Clips (2 or 4 depending on kit), Connecting Link (for SDK/SDT kits), Silicone Grease, Assembly Dowel, 13/32” x 1-1/2” Fuse (600V max, non-glass body), Copper Conductors (14-2 AWG)

  1. De-energize and Prepare Workspace

CAUTION: Identify Line and Load side wires and match housing body parts before installing. All associated wires and working area must be de-energized. WARNING: Danger of Electric Shock! Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable local, state and national electrical codes, installation standards and safety rules.

  2. Prepare Cable Ends

For 14 AWG to 10 AWG copper conductors, strip 3/4 inch of insulation. For 8 AWG to 4 AWG copper conductors, strip 3/8 inch of insulation. Do not pencil insulation and do not exceed the specified strip length. Wipe the cable clean and bevel the end of the cable insulation for easier installation.

  3. Prepare Line End Housing and Insert Cable

Select the correct cut-off ring on the Line End housing for your cable size. Cut off the end of the housing at the tip of the arrow, ensuring the correct cable size is visible. Apply silicone grease to the end of the prepared cable and to the cut opening of the Line End housing. Insert the cable into the Line End housing until it extends 2 to 3 inches beyond the housing.

  4. Prepare Load End Housing and Assemble

Repeat the cable preparation and housing insertion steps for the Load End housing. Insert the connecting link (for SDK/SDT kits) or the appropriate 13/32” x 1-1/2” (600V max, non-glass body) fuse into the Load End housing. Carefully mate the Line End and Load End housings to establish the electrical connection.

  5. Install and Position Fuse Clips

Apply a small amount of silicone grease to the fuse clip. Slide the housing over the fuse clip until resistance is felt. Using the provided wood dowel as an assembly and depth gauge tool, insert the fuse clip to the depth indicated for both line and load side housings as marked on the dowel. DO NOT exceed these depths.

  6. Crimp Fuse Clips to Conductors

Crimp the fuse clip onto the conductor using the appropriate crimp tool and die based on the conductor size (14-2 AWG copper only). Refer to the provided chart for specific tool (T & B No. WT 111M or TBM-20S) and cavity ('C', 'BLUE', 'GRAY', 'BROWN') recommendations. For some applications, perform two crimps rotated 90 degrees.
