A step-by-step guide for installing Thomas & Betts Flood-Seal Street Light Fuse Kits (SLK) or Link Kits (SDK), including cable preparation, assembly, and final connection for 600-volt copper and aluminum conductors.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Torque wrench (25 in-lbs), Wire strippers, Utility knife
Supplies needed:
SLK or SDK Kit, Appropriate 13/32 inch cartridge fuse (max 600V, for SLK kits), Connecting link (for SDK kits), Copper or Aluminum Conductors (600V rated)
- Ensure Safety and De-energize
Identify line- and load- side wires and match the housing body parts before installing. Ensure all associated wires and the working area are de-energized. Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable local, state, and national electrical codes, installation standards, and safety rules to prevent danger of electric shock.
- Prepare Conductors
Strip 3/4 inch of insulation from the end of both the line-side and load-side conductors, baring the conductor.
- Prepare Line-End Housing and Cable
Select the correct cut-off ring on the line-end housing for the cable being used. Cut off the end housing at the tip of the arrow, leaving the correct cable size showing. Wipe the cable clean and pencil the end of the cable insulation for ease of installation. Apply silicone grease to the end of the cable and to the cut opening of the line-end housing. DO NOT grease the sealing rings on the line-end.
- Insert Cable and Torque Line-End
Insert the prepared line-side cable into the line-end housing until it extends 2 to 3 inches beyond the housing. Insert the cable into the line-end assembly and torque the set screw to 25 in-lbs.
- Prepare Load-End Housing and Cable, Insert Fuse/Link
Repeat the preparation steps for the load-end housing and cable: select and cut the correct ring, wipe the cable, pencil the insulation, and apply silicone grease to the cable end and cut opening. Insert the prepared load-side cable into the load-end housing until it extends 2 to 3 inches beyond the housing. Insert the cable into the load-end assembly and torque the set screw to 25 in-lbs. For SLK kits, insert the appropriate 13/32 inch (max 600 Volt) cartridge fuse (DO NOT use glass body fuse) into the load-end assembly. For SDK kits, insert the connecting link. Grease the sealing area of the load-end.
- Seal Both Ends with Rockets
Mate a Flood-Seal Rocket to the line-end assembly for a watertight seal. Repeat this process, mating the second Flood-Seal Rocket to the load-end assembly for a watertight seal.
- Make Final Electrical Connection
Mate the sealed line-end housing to the sealed load-end housing to complete the electrical connection.
