Overview

The ABB RAB 1/0-31 is a multi-port aluminum Flood-Seal connector from the RAB 1/0 Series, designed for reliable electrical terminations in secondary underground distribution systems. Constructed from high-strength, high-conductivity 6061-T6 aluminum alloy, this connector ensures long-lasting performance with corrosion-resistant properties. The Flood-Seal design provides environmental ingress protection, making it suitable for URD direct burial, below-grade boxes, above-grade pedestals, and street light taps. The connector measures 4.60" x 2.90" (117 mm x 74 mm) and features tin-plated screws and high-performance TPE compound insulation. Each unit is 100% hi-pot tested at 4000 V for 60 seconds to ensure safety and performance. The RAB 1/0-31 model includes four outlets, allowing for multiple conductor connections in a single unit. This design simplifies wiring consolidation and streamlines installation in space-constrained or hard-to-access applications. The connector is ANSI C119.1 compliant and RUS accepted, meeting industry standards for underground distribution systems.

How to Install the Multi-Seal® RAB 1/0 Series Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and correct installation of the Multi-Seal® RAB 1/0 Series connector. It covers preparing the connector, stripping the cable, inserting it, and torquing the connection. Always follow local electrical codes and wear appropriate safety gear.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

Torque wrench, Wire strippers, Utility knife, Insulating gloves (rated to appropriate voltage)

Supplies needed:

Multi-Seal® RAB 1/0 Series connector, Electrical cable (appropriate size), Sealant for unused cable ports (if applicable)

  1. Observe Safety and Prepare Connector Cap

WARNING: Danger of Electric Shock! Ensure all installations are performed by trained personnel according to applicable electrical codes. Wear insulating gloves rated to the appropriate voltage when working on live conductors, and ensure tap conductors are not under load. If installing #14 to #4 AWG cable, first remove the cap, cut it at the correct cut-off ring, then reinsert it. For #2 to 1/0 AWG cable, the cap is not required. Ensure all unused cable ports are sealed.

  2. Remove the Screw Plug

Locate and remove the screw plug from the connector body.

  3. Measure and Strip the Cable

Place the cable alongside the markings on the bottom of the connector to measure the correct strip length. Carefully strip the cable insulation to the measured length. When reinstalling a cable, it must be of the same size or larger than the one removed.

  4. Insert Cable into Connector

Insert the prepared cable fully into the appropriate opening: into the tower for #2 to 1/0 AWG cables, or into the cap for #14 to #4 AWG cables. Ensure it is seated completely.

  5. Replace Plug and Torque Connector

Replace the screw plug into the connector. Using a torque wrench, tighten the connector to 80 in/lbs to ensure a secure and reliable electrical connection.
