How to Install the R2T35M 35kV Ranger 2 Shrink-fit Silicone Rubber Termination

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 35kV Ranger 2 Shrink-fit Silicone Rubber Termination on tape shielded cables, including cable preparation, ground braid installation, lug connection, and termination application. Always ensure all apparatus is de-energized and follow high-voltage safety practices.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Crimping tool, Wire strippers, Measuring tape, Knife or utility blade, Solvent applicator (e.g., pads or cloth), Abrasive applicator (e.g., pads or cloth, if abrasive is used)

Supplies needed:

Silicone Rubber Termination Halves, Silicone Lubricant, Gray Silicone Rubber Electrical Tape, Constant Force Spring, Preformed Ground Braid, Sealing Mastic, Copper Foil Tape, Safety Gloves, Electrical Connector or Lug, Cable Support Bracket (Optional), Vinyl Electrical Tape, Approved Solvent, Aluminum Oxide Abrasive (120 grit or finer, optional), Oxide Inhibitor

  1. Prepare the Cable

Verify the cable size matches the termination selection chart. Train the cable into its final position and cut it to the required length. Prepare the cable by removing 13-1/2” (340mm) of the jacket. Allow for 2” (50mm) depth for the terminal lug plus additional growth allowance (1/4” to 3/4” for aluminum lugs). Remove 1” (25mm) of the tape shield. Secure the edge of the tape shield with a single wrap of copper foil tape to prevent unrolling. Ensure all dimensions are accurate.

  2. Install the Ground Braid

Apply one band of sealing mastic around the cable jacket, 1/4” (6mm) from the jacket end, stretching it to 50%. Cut the mastic flush without overlapping. Position the preformed ground braid with its short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the mastic strip. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket with vinyl tape and press the solder block firmly into the mastic. Apply a second mastic band over the solder block and the first mastic, maintaining the 1/4” (6mm) dimension, and cut flush. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal, maintaining the 1/4” (6mm) dimension. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield for one complete wrap, trim any excess to prevent overlap, and secure it in place with the constant force spring. Wrap the spring in the same direction as the ground braid, cinch it after the final winding, and secure it with two wraps of vinyl tape. If using cloth or paper semi-conductive shields, overwrap the shield with one half-lapped layer of highly stretched semi-conductive rubber tape.

  3. Install the Lug or Connector

Before installing, verify that the termination assembly can slide over the selected lug or connector. If it does not fit, slide the termination onto the cable first, ensuring the core remains in place. Position the connector or lug onto the cable conductor and crimp it according to the manufacturer's instructions, leaving the last 3/8” to 1/2” of the connector uncrimped. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings or edges.

  4. Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel

Thoroughly wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, taking care not to allow the solvent to contact the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (120 grit or finer) on the insulation, avoiding the semi-conductive shield. Ensure that the cable insulation diameter is not reduced below the kit's specified limits.

  5. Install the Termination Halves

Create a track-resistant moisture seal between the termination insulator and the lug/connector using the gray silicone rubber electrical tape. Wrap a band of tape around the base of the terminal lug; use a maximum of two layers if the barrel diameter is equal to or greater than the cable primary insulation, or build up the tape band to equal the insulation diameter if the barrel is smaller. Liberally coat the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield with silicone grease to fill the step. For the lower termination with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top until it is flush with the bottom of the termination. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise from the loose end, ensuring the termination body butts against the leading edge of the mastic seal. Do not push or pull the termination assembly during core removal. For the second housing, pull its core down to within one coil of the bottom. Slide this termination over the cable and carefully pull its core counter-clockwise, overlapping the first termination by 1-1/2” (40mm). Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area (avoiding skirt tabs), then carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber electrical tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1” and extending the tape over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Finally, connect the ground braid to the system ground and confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5”.
