How to Install the R2T35J 35kV Ranger 2 Cable Terminator
This guide provides detailed instructions for preparing the cable, installing the lug or connector, cleaning the cable insulation, and installing the R2T35J 35kV Ranger 2 Cable Terminator for high-voltage indoor/outdoor applications on concentric and jacketed concentric neutral cables.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Knife or cutting tool, Vinyl tape, Gloves, Approved solvent, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer, if required)
Supplies needed:
R2T35J 35kV Ranger 2 Cable Terminator Kit (includes Silicone Rubber Termination Halves, Lubricant, Grey Silicone Rubber Tape, Sealing Mastic), Compatible connector or lugs (Elastimold copper or aluminum recommended), High-voltage cable (concentric or jacketed concentric neutral), Silicone grease, Binding wire (optional, alternative to vinyl tape), Cable Support Bracket (optional)
- Perform Safety Checks and Gather Materials
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high-voltage safety practices. Check the kit contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit the cable and mating products. Read all instructions thoroughly and have all required tools and supplies ready, maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Confirm the cable size is within the kit's specified range. Train the cable into position and cut to the required length, ensuring sufficient neutral wire length for grounding. Prepare the cable according to the provided dimensions, allowing for terminal lug depth and additional conductor length for crimping. Apply the first band of mastic 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end, stretching 50% and cutting flush. Bend neutral wires back, press into the mastic, and secure them 4-6 inches (100-150mm) from the cut edge with vinyl tape or binding wire. Apply a second mastic band over the neutral wires and previous mastic, then wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape over the mastic seal.
- Install the Terminal Lug or Connector
If using lugs that do not fit through the termination core, clean the cable insulation and slide the termination onto the cable *before* installing the lug. Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's directions, avoiding crimping the last 1/4 to 3/8 inch of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, taking care not to let the solvent touch the semi-con insulation shield. If using an abrasive, apply only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) to the insulation, avoiding the semi-con shield. Ensure the cable insulation diameter is not reduced below the kit's allowed specifications.
- Install the First Termination Half
Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping a band of gray silicone rubber tape around the base of the terminal lug. The tape band should not exceed two layers if the barrel diameter is equal to or greater than the primary insulation; otherwise, build it up to the insulation diameter. Liberally coat the edge of the semi-con insulation shield with silicone grease to fill the step. Pull the loose end of the removable core of the lower termination through the top until it is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, ensuring the termination body is butted against the mastic seal without pushing or pulling the assembly.
- Install the Second Termination Half and Complete Sealing
For the second housing, pull the core down within one coil of the bottom. Slide the terminator over the cable and carefully pull the core counter-clockwise, overlapping the first terminator by 1-1/2 inches (40mm). Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, but not to the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending it over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect them to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
