How to Install the R2T28M2 Silicone Rubber Termination
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the R2T28M2 Ranger 2 Shrink-fit Silicone Rubber Termination on 28kV cables, including cable preparation, ground braid installation, lug connection, and termination placement.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Crimping tool, Cable knife, Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
R2T28M2 Termination Kit, Terminal lug or connector, Vinyl tape, Approved solvent, Aluminum oxide abrasive (optional)
- Prepare Cable and Ensure Safety
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Confirm the cable size fits the termination kit. Train the cable into position and cut to the required length. Prepare the cable by removing the jacket, semi-con, and insulation to the specified dimensions, allowing for terminal lug depth and conductor growth. Consult the specific cable type section (Tape Shield, Wire Shield, or UniShield®) for detailed preparation instructions, including managing shield wires or tape and using copper foil tape if applicable.
- Install Ground Braid
Apply one band of mastic around the cable jacket 1/4” (6mm) from the jacket end, stretching 50%. Position the preformed ground braid with the short tail over the shield (tape shield, drain wires, or unishield wires) and the solder block centered over the mastic. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket with vinyl tape and press the solder block into the mastic. Apply a second mastic band over the solder block, maintaining the 1/4” (6mm) dimension. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape over the mastic seal. Wrap the ground braid around the cable shield one complete wrap, trim excess, and secure with the constant force spring, wrapping in the same direction and cinching after the final winding. Secure the spring with two wraps of vinyl tape.
- Install Terminal Lug or Connector
Ensure the termination assembly fits over the selected lug. If not, clean the insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core yet). Position the connector/lug and crimp according to the manufacturer’s directions. For aluminum lugs, do not crimp the last 3/8” to 1/2” of the connector. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings and edges after crimping.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Install Termination Body
Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, ensuring solvent does not touch the semi-con insulation shield. If abrasive is necessary, use only aluminum oxide (grit 120 or finer) on insulation only, being careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter. Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping 1-2 layers of gray silicone rubber electrical tape around the base of the terminal lug. Cover the edge of the semi-con insulation shield with a liberal coating of silicone grease to fill the step. Pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until it is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding counter-clockwise, ensuring the termination body, not the core, is butted against the mastic seal. Do not push or pull on the termination assembly while removing the core.
- Complete Moisture Seal and Ground Connection
Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, but not the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber electrical tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1” and extending over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Connect the ground braid to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5”.
