How to Install the R2T28M2 Silicone Rubber Termination on Tape Shielded Cable
This guide provides detailed instructions for installing the R2T28M2 Ranger 2 Shrink-fit Silicone Rubber Termination on 28kV tape-shielded cables, covering cable preparation, ground braid installation, and termination placement.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Crimping tool, Soldering iron, Wire strippers, Measuring tape, Scissors or utility knife, Solvent applicator pads, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer)
Supplies needed:
R2T28M2 Silicone Rubber Termination Kit, Silicone lubricant, Gray silicone rubber electrical tape, Constant force spring, Preformed ground braid, Sealing mastic, Copper foil tape, Gloves, Vinyl electrical tape, Terminal lug or connector, Oxide inhibitor (for aluminum lugs)
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Verify the cable size fits within the termination's insulation range. Train the cable into position and cut to the required length. Prepare the cable by removing the jacket, tape shield, and insulation according to the specified dimensions, allowing for terminal lug depth and aluminum lug growth. Secure the edge of the tape shield with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape to prevent unrolling.
- Install the Ground Braid Assembly
Carefully wrap one band of mastic around the cable jacket 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end, using 50% stretch. Position the preformed ground braid with the short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the mastic strip. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket with vinyl tape and press the solder block into the mastic. Apply a second mastic band over the solder block and the first mastic, maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield one complete wrap, trim any excess, and secure it in place with the constant force spring. Cinch the spring after the final winding and secure it with two wraps of vinyl tape.
- Install the Terminal Lug or Connector
Ensure the termination assembly fits over the selected lug; if not, slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug. Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's directions, leaving the last 3/8 to 1/2 inch uncrimped. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings and edges after crimping.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, ensuring the solvent does not touch the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation, being careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the kit's specifications. Do not use abrasive on the semi-conductive insulation shield.
- Install the Silicone Rubber Termination Body
Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping a band of gray silicone rubber electrical tape around the base of the terminal lug. If the barrel diameter is smaller than the cable primary insulation, build up the tape band to equal the insulation diameter. Cover the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield with a liberal coating of silicone grease to fill the step at the semi-con cut-off. Pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until it is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, starting with the loose end. Ensure the termination body, not the core, is butted against the leading edge of the mastic seal. Do not push or pull on the termination assembly while removing the core.
- Complete Sealing and Grounding
Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, avoiding the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber electrical tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending the tape wrapping over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Connect the ground braid to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
