How to Install the 28kV Ranger 2 Shrink-Fit Silicone Rubber Termination (R2T28M4)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 28kV Ranger 2 Shrink-Fit Silicone Rubber Termination on tape-shielded cables, covering cable preparation, ground braid installation, lug connection, and termination placement. DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Cable knife, Crimping tool, Soldering iron, Measuring tape or ruler, Solvent applicator pads, Abrasive material (aluminum oxide, grit 120 or finer)
Supplies needed:
28kV Ranger 2 Shrink-Fit Silicone Rubber Termination Kit (includes termination, silicone lubricant, gray silicone rubber electrical tape, constant force spring, preformed ground braid, sealing mastic, copper foil tape, gloves), Compatible terminal lug or connector, Vinyl electrical tape, Approved solvent
- Initial Safety Checks and Cable Preparation
De-energize all apparatus before beginning installation. Inspect all kit components for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Select the correct cable size and cut to the required length. Prepare the cable by removing the jacket, tape shield, and semi-conductive layer according to the specified dimensions (refer to Table 1 and growth allowance for aluminum lugs). Secure the edge of the tape shield with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape to prevent unrolling.
- Ground Braid Installation and Lug Connection
Wrap one band of sealing mastic (50% stretch) 1/4 inch (6mm) from the cable jacket end, ensuring it is positioned carefully as a marker. Position the preformed ground braid with the short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the mastic strip. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket with vinyl tape and press the solder block firmly into the mastic. Apply a second mastic band (50% stretch) over the solder block and first mastic, maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension, then wrap with two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield one complete wrap, trim any excess to prevent overlap, and secure it in place with the constant force spring. Wrap the spring in the same direction as the ground braid, cinch it tightly after the final winding, and secure it with two wraps of vinyl tape. Install the terminal lug or connector according to the manufacturer's directions, ensuring the termination assembly fits over it. Do not crimp the last 3/8 to 1/2 inch of the connector. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor or sharp crimp flashings and edges following crimping.
- Cable Cleaning and Termination Installation
Clean the cable insulation with an approved solvent, ensuring the solvent does not touch the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive material is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation, being careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter. Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping a band of gray silicone rubber electrical tape around the base of the terminal lug. Liberally coat the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield with silicone grease to fill the step at the semi-con cut-off. For lower terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until the core is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, starting with the loose end. Ensure the termination body, not the core, is butted up to the leading edge of the mastic seal. Continue removing the core without pushing or pulling on the termination assembly. Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area (do not lubricate the skirt tabs), then carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber electrical tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending the tape wrapping over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Connect the ground braid to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
