How to Install the R2T35J4N0230 35kV Cable Terminator
Step-by-step guide for installing the R2T35J4N0230 35kV Ranger 2 Cable Terminator on concentric and jacketed concentric neutral cables.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Screwdriver, Wire strippers, Approved solvent, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer, if needed)
Supplies needed:
Silicone Rubber Termination Halves, Lubricant, Strips Grey Silicone Rubber Tape, Strips Sealing Mastic, Gloves, Vinyl tape or binding wire, Terminal lug (if not included), System ground connection
- Prepare the Cable
Verify the cable size is within the kit's range. Train the cable into position and cut to the required length, ensuring sufficient neutral wire length for grounding. Prepare the cable according to the specified dimensions, allowing for terminal lug depth and extra exposed conductor for crimping. Wrap one band of mastic around the cable jacket 1/4" (6mm) from the end, cut flush. Bend neutral wires back over the mastic and secure them to the cable jacket 4-6" (100-150mm) from the cut edge using vinyl tape or binding wire. Apply a second mastic band over the neutral wires and the first mastic, cut flush. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal, maintaining the 1/4" (6mm) dimension.
- Install Lug or Connector
If using the included lug or connector, position it and crimp according to the manufacturer's directions. Do not crimp the last 1/4" to 3/8" of the connector. Remove excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings. If a different lug is used and does not fit through the termination core, slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug. Do not remove the core at this time.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, avoiding contact with the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation only, being careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the kit's allowance.
- Install Termination - First Housing
Wrap a band of gray silicone rubber tape around the base of the terminal lug to create a track-resistant moisture seal. The tape band should not exceed 2 layers if the barrel diameter is equal to or greater than the cable primary insulation. If the barrel diameter is smaller, use the tape strip to form a band equal to the insulation diameter. Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease to the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield to fill the step at the cut-off. For the lower termination with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top until it is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding counter-clockwise, ensuring the termination body, not the core, is butted against the mastic seal. Do not push or pull on the termination assembly during core removal.
- Install Termination - Second Housing
Using the second housing, carefully pull the core down to within 1 coil of the bottom. Slide the terminator over the cable and carefully pull the core counterclockwise. Overlap the first terminator by 1-1/2" (40mm).
- Complete Termination Sealing
Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area (do not lubricate skirt tabs). Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1" and extending the tape wrapping over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel in a half-lap configuration. Confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5".
- Connect Ground
Twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect them to the system ground.
