How to Install the R2T28M4 Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the R2T28M4 Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination on high-voltage cables, covering cable preparation, ground braid installation, lug connection, and termination placement.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable preparation tools (strippers, knives), Measuring tape or ruler, Crimping tool (for lugs/connectors), Vinyl tape, Approved solvent and pads, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer, if needed), Gloves

Supplies needed:

R2T28M4 Silicone Rubber Termination kit, Lubricant (Silicone grease), Gray Silicone Rubber Electrical Tape, Constant Force Spring, Preformed Ground Braid, Sealing Mastic, Copper Foil Tape (for tape shield cables), Terminal Lug or Connector

  1. Ensure Safety and Prepare Cable

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation. Verify that the cable size fits within the insulation range specified in the Termination Selection Chart. Train the cable into its final position and cut it to the required length, allowing for terminal lug depth and aluminum lug growth allowance. Prepare the cable by removing the jacket, semi-con, and insulation according to the dimensions provided in Table 1 and the document figures. If using tape shield cable, secure the tape shield edge with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape to prevent unrolling.

  2. Install Ground Braid

Carefully wrap one band of mastic around the cable jacket 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end, using 50% stretch. Position the preformed ground braid with the short tail over the tape shield (or drain wires for wire shield cables) and the solder block centered over the mastic strip. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket using vinyl tape and press the solder block into the mastic. Apply a second mastic band over the solder block and previous mastic, maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension, using 50% stretch. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal. Wrap the ground braid around the cable shield one complete wrap, trim excess, and secure it with the constant force spring, wrapping in the same direction. Cinch the spring after the final winding and secure it with two wraps of vinyl tape.

  3. Install Terminal Lug or Connector

Check that the termination assembly fits over the selected lug. If the lug will not fit, clean the insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core yet). Position the connector/lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's directions. Do not crimp the last 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch of the connector. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings and edges after crimping.

  4. Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel

Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, ensuring it does not touch the semi-con insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation only, avoiding the semi-con insulation shield. Be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the kit's allowed range.

  5. Install Termination Body

Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping a band of gray silicone rubber electrical tape around the base of the terminal lug. Adjust the number of tape layers (max 2) if the barrel diameter is equal to or greater than the cable primary insulation, or build up to insulation diameter if smaller. Cover the edge of the semi-con insulation shield with a liberal coating of silicone grease to fill the step. For lower terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until it is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, ensuring the termination body remains butted against the mastic seal. Do not push or pull the termination assembly during core removal.

  6. Complete Sealing and Grounding

Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area (do not lubricate skirt tabs). Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber electrical tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending the tape wrapping over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Connect the ground braid to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
