How to Install the R2T28J4 Ranger 2 Cable Termination
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 15kV & 28kV Ranger 2 Cable Termination on concentric and jacketed concentric neutral cables for indoor/outdoor applications. It covers cable preparation, lug installation, cleaning, and termination assembly.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Crimping tool, Wire strippers, Cable cutting tool, Measuring tape
Supplies needed:
R2T28J4 Silicone Rubber Termination, Silicone Lubricant, Grey Silicone Rubber Tape, Sealing Mastic, Gloves, Electrical Connector/Lug, Vinyl tape or binding wire, Approved solvent, Aluminum oxide abrasive (optional), Silicone grease
- De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Verify that the kit contents are complete and undamaged, and that all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Read all instructions thoroughly before beginning.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable into position and cut it to the required length for installation, ensuring sufficient neutral wire length for the grounding connection. Prepare the cable using the dimensions provided in the instructions, allowing for the depth of the terminal lug and additional exposed conductor distance for crimping. Apply the first band of sealing mastic around the cable jacket 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end, using 50% stretch, and cut it flush without overlap. Bend the neutral wires back over and press them into the sealing mastic, then secure them to the cable jacket 4-6 inches (100-150mm) from the cut edge using vinyl tape or binding wire. Apply a second mastic band over the neutral wires and the previously applied mastic, using 50% stretch, and cut it flush without overlap. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal, carefully maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension.
- Install the Lug or Connector
If using a lug that will not fit through the termination core, clean the insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core at this time). Position the connector/lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's directions, ensuring not to crimp the last 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch of the connector. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings after crimping.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent. Do not allow the solvent to touch the semi-con insulation shield. If abrasive must be used, apply it only on the insulation (not the semi-con shield), use aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer), and be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below that allowed by the kit.
- Install the Termination Body
Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping a band of gray silicone rubber tape around the base of the terminal lug. Adjust the number of layers based on whether the barrel diameter is equal to or smaller than the cable primary insulation. Cover the edge of the semi-con insulation shield with a liberal coating of silicone grease to fill the step at the semi-con cut off. For lower terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until the core is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, starting with the loose end, ensuring the termination body (not the core) is butted up to the leading edge of the mastic seal. Do not push or pull on the termination assembly during core removal.
- Complete Termination Sealing and Grounding
Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area (do not lubricate skirt tabs). Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect them to the system ground. Confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
