How to Install the R2T28M2-N0250 15kV & 28kV Ranger 2 Shrink fit Silicone Rubber Termination
Installation guide for mounting and wiring the R2T28M2-N0250 15kV & 28kV Ranger 2 Shrink fit Silicone Rubber Termination for indoor/outdoor application with High-K stress relief.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Screwdriver, Wire strippers, Utility knife, Measuring tape, Soldering iron, Vinyl tape, Solvent saturated pads, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer)
Supplies needed:
Silicone Rubber Termination kit, Lubricant, Gray Silicone Rubber Tape, Constant Force Spring, Preformed Ground Braid, Mastic, Copper Foil Tape, Gloves, Aluminum Lug or Connector, System ground connection
- Prepare the Cable
Verify the cable size fits within the insulation range specified in the Termination Selection Chart. Train the cable into position and cut to the required length. Prepare the cable according to the dimensions provided for your specific cable type (Tape Shield, Wire Shield, or UniShield®), ensuring to account for the depth of the terminal lug and any growth allowance for aluminum lugs. For tape shield cables, hold down the edge with copper foil tape to prevent unrolling. For wire shield cables, bend the leading shield wires back onto the jacket. For UniShield® cables, remove the semi-conductive jacket to the specified cut line, taking care not to bell the jacket.
- Install Ground Braid
Apply one band of mastic around the cable jacket 1/4" (6mm) from the jacket end, ensuring it is flush and not overlapped. Position the preformed ground braid with its short tail over the cable shield (tape shield, drain wires, or UniShield® wires) and center the solder block over the mastic strip. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket with vinyl tape and press the solder block into the mastic. Apply a second mastic band over the solder block and first mastic, maintaining the 1/4" (6mm) dimension. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal. Wrap the ground braid around the cable shield one complete wrap, trim excess, and secure with a constant force spring. Cinch the spring and secure it with two wraps of vinyl tape.
- Install Lug or Connector
Ensure the termination assembly fits over the selected lug. If not, clean the insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug. Do not remove the termination core at this time. Position the connector/lug and crimp according to the manufacturer's directions, leaving the last 3/8" to 1/2" uncrimped. Remove excess oxide inhibitor and any sharp edges from the crimp.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation with approved solvent pads. Avoid contact with the semi-conductive insulation shield. If an abrasive is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation only, being careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the kit's allowance.
- Install Termination
Create a moisture seal between the termination insulator and the lug/connector using gray silicone rubber electrical tape. Wrap a band of silicone tape around the base of the terminal lug, ensuring no more than 2 layers if the barrel diameter is equal to or greater than the cable primary insulation, or forming the band to match the insulation diameter if the barrel is smaller. Cover the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield with silicone grease. For lower terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the removable core through the top until flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding counter-clockwise, ensuring the termination body is butted up to the mastic seal. Do not push or pull the assembly during core removal. Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area (do not lubricate skirt tabs) and carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal by overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1" and extending the tape wrapping over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Connect the ground braid to the system ground. Confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5".
