How to Install 15kV & 28kV Ranger 2 Cable Termination

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the Ranger 2 Cable Termination on concentric and jacketed concentric neutral cables for indoor/outdoor high-voltage applications. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before starting installation.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Measuring tape or ruler, Cleaning cloth or rag

Supplies needed:

Silicone Rubber Termination kit, Lubricant (kit content), Grey Silicone Rubber Tape (kit content), Sealing Mastic (kit content), Gloves (kit content), Approved solvent, Vinyl tape or binding wire, Terminal lug or connector, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer, if needed), Silicone grease

  1. Prepare Cable for Termination

First, check that the cable size fits within the kit's specified range. Train the cable into position and cut it to the required length, ensuring sufficient neutral wire length for the grounding connection. Prepare the cable ends according to the provided dimensions for the cable jacket, mastic, neutral wires, and semi-con, allowing for the terminal lug depth and any conductor growth during crimping. Wrap one band of sealing mastic around the cable jacket 1/4” (6mm) from the jacket end, stretching it 50%, and cut it flush without overlapping. Bend the neutral wires back over the mastic, press them into the seal, and secure them to the cable jacket 4-6” (100-150mm) from the cut edge using vinyl tape or binding wire. Apply a second mastic band over the neutral wires and the first mastic band, stretching it 50%, and cut it flush. Finally, wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal, carefully maintaining the 1/4” (6mm) dimension.

  2. Install Terminal Lug or Connector

Ensure the chosen terminal lug or connector is compatible with the termination core. If the lug will not fit through the termination core, clean the insulation and slide the termination body onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core at this stage). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to its specific directions, making sure to leave the last 1/4” to 3/8” of the connector uncrimped. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings.

  3. Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel

Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, taking care not to allow the solvent to touch the semi-con insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation only, avoiding the semi-con insulation shield. Be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the limits allowed by the kit.

  4. Install Silicone Rubber Termination Body

Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping a band of gray silicone rubber tape around the base of the terminal lug. Adjust the number of tape layers based on whether the barrel diameter is equal to, greater than, or smaller than the cable primary insulation diameter. Liberally coat the edge of the semi-con insulation shield with silicone grease to fill the step at the semi-con cut-off. For lower terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until it is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise from the loose end, ensuring the termination body remains butted against the mastic seal without pushing or pulling. Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area (avoiding skirt tabs), then carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1” and extending over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect them to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5”.
