How to Install the R2T28J2 Ranger 2 Cable Termination
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the R2T28J2 28kV Ranger 2 Cable Termination for concentric and jacketed concentric neutral cables in indoor/outdoor applications.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Measuring tape, Utility knife, Solvent applicator (e.g., clean cloth), Abrasive (aluminum oxide, grit 120 or finer, optional)
Supplies needed:
R2T28J2 Silicone Rubber Termination kit (includes termination, lubricant, grey silicone rubber tape, sealing mastic, gloves), Connector (if not included in kit), Cable support bracket (optional), Vinyl tape or binding wire, Approved solvent, Silicone grease
- Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety
Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety. Check the kit contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit the cable and mating products. Have all required tools and supplies ready, and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable into position and cut to the required length, allowing sufficient neutral wire length for grounding. Verify the cable size fits the kit range. Prepare the cable using the dimensions provided in Table 1 for R2T28J2 (Dimension A: 10.5 inches). Allow additional exposed conductor distance for aluminum lug crimping (1/4” for #2-350, 1/2” for 400-650, 3/4” for 750-1000 Kcmil). Wrap one band of sealing mastic around the cable jacket 1/4” (6mm) from the jacket end, stretching 50%. Bend neutral wires back over the mastic and secure them to the cable jacket 4-6” (100-150mm) from the cut edge using vinyl tape or binding wire. Apply a second mastic band over the neutral wires, stretching 50%. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape over the mastic seal, carefully maintaining the 1/4” (6mm) dimension.
- Install the Terminal Lug or Connector
If using a lug that does not fit through the termination core, clean the insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core yet). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to its specific directions. Do not crimp the last 1/4” to 3/8” of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, ensuring the solvent does not touch the semi-con insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation only, avoiding the semi-con shield. Be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the kit's allowed range.
- Install the Silicone Rubber Termination Body
Create a track-resistant moisture seal between the termination insulator and the lug/connector by wrapping a band of gray silicone rubber tape around the base of the terminal lug. If the barrel diameter is smaller than the cable primary insulation, build up the tape band to equal the insulation diameter. Liberally coat the edge of the semi-con insulation shield with silicone grease to fill the step at the semi-con cut-off. For lower terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until it is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise from the loose end. Ensure the termination body, not the core, is butted against the leading edge of the mastic seal. Do not push or pull the termination assembly during core removal.
- Complete Termination Sealing and Grounding
Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, but avoid lubricating the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1” and extending the tape wrapping over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect them securely to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
