How to Install the R2T28J4 Cable Termination

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the R2T28J4 28kV Ranger 2 Cable Termination for concentric and jacketed concentric neutral cables in indoor/outdoor applications. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Crimping tool, Wire strippers, Approved solvent applicator, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer, if needed)

Supplies needed:

R2T28J4 Termination Kit (Silicone Rubber Termination, Lubricant, Grey Silicone Rubber Tape, Sealing Mastic, Gloves), Terminal lug (copper or aluminum), Approved solvent, Vinyl tape, Binding wire (optional)

  1. Perform Initial Checks and Ensure Safety

Check the contents of the package to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Read these entire installation instructions before starting. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts to prevent serious or fatal injury.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Termination

Confirm the cable size fits within the kit's specified range. Train the cable into position and cut it to the required length, allowing sufficient neutral wire length for grounding. Prepare the cable using the dimensions shown in the documentation, accounting for terminal lug depth and additional exposed conductor distance for crimping. Wrap one band of sealing mastic around the cable jacket 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end, stretching it 50%. Bend the neutral wires back over the mastic and press them into it, securing them to the cable jacket 4-6 inches (100-150mm) from the cut edge using vinyl tape or binding wire. Apply a second mastic band over the neutral wires and the first mastic, stretching 50%. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal, carefully maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension.

  3. Install the Terminal Lug or Connector

If using a lug that will not fit through the termination core, clean the insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core at this time). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to its specific directions, ensuring the last 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch of the connector is not crimped. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings.

  4. Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel

Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, taking care not to allow the solvent to touch the semi-con insulation shield. If an abrasive is necessary, use it only on the insulation (not the semi-con shield), ensure it is aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer), and be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the kit's allowed range.

  5. Install the Termination Body

Create a track-resistant moisture seal between the termination insulator and the lug/connector using the gray silicone rubber tape from the kit. Wrap a band of silicone tape around the base of the terminal lug, adjusting layers if the barrel diameter differs from the cable primary insulation. Liberally coat the edge of the semi-con insulation shield with silicone grease to fill the step at the semi-con cut-off. For lower terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top until it is flush with the bottom of the termination. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, starting with the loose end. Ensure the termination body, not the core, is butted against the leading edge of the mastic seal. Do not push or pull on the termination assembly while removing the core material.

  6. Complete Sealing and Grounding

Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, but do not lubricate the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending the tape wrapping over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect them to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
