How to Install the R2T28J2 28kV Ranger 2 Cable Termination
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the R2T28J2 28kV Ranger 2 Cable Termination on concentric and jacketed concentric neutral cables. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized and follow safety practices for high voltage electrical equipment during installation.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Crimping tool, Wire strippers, Approved solvent, Rags, Aluminum oxide abrasive (120 grit or finer, optional), Measuring tape
Supplies needed:
R2T28J2 Silicone Rubber Termination Kit, Connector (if not integral), Cable Support Bracket (optional), Vinyl tape or binding wire, Silicone grease
- Prepare the Cable
Check the cable size against the kit range. Train and cut the cable to the required length, allowing sufficient neutral wire length for grounding. Prepare the cable insulation and semi-con shield according to specified dimensions, accounting for lug depth and aluminum lug growth. Wrap the first mastic band 1/4 inch (6mm) from the cable jacket end, ensuring it's flush without overlap. Bend neutral wires back over the mastic, press them in, and secure them to the cable jacket 4-6 inches (100-150mm) from the cut edge using vinyl tape or binding wire. Apply a second mastic band over the neutral wires and the first mastic, cutting it flush without overlap. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape over the mastic seal, maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension.
- Install the Lug or Connector
If using a lug that does not fit through the termination core, slide the termination body onto the cable before installing the lug. Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to directions, leaving the last 1/4 to 3/8 inch uncrimped. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings after crimping.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, ensuring the solvent does not touch the semi-con insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (120 grit or finer) on the insulation, avoiding the semi-con shield and ensuring the cable insulation diameter is not reduced below that allowed by the kit.
- Install the Termination Body
Wrap a band of grey silicone rubber tape around the base of the terminal lug to create a track-resistant moisture seal. Adjust the number of tape layers if the barrel diameter is smaller than the cable primary insulation. Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease to the edge of the semi-con insulation shield to fill the step at the cut-off. For terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until the core is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise from the loose end, ensuring the termination body, not the core, butts against the leading edge of the mastic seal. Do not push or pull the termination during this process. Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area (avoiding skirt tabs). Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining grey silicone rubber tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect them to the system ground. Confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
