How to Install the R2T28L4 Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the installation of the R2T28L4 Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination, including cable preparation, ground braid installation, and final sealing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Solvent saturated pads, Aluminum oxide abrasive (optional)

Supplies needed:

R2T28L4 Silicone Rubber Termination kit, Preformed Ground Braid, Constant Force Spring, Grey Silicone Rubber Tape, Sealing mastic, Lubricant, Gloves, Connector (optional), Cable Support Bracket (optional), Vinyl tape

  1. Prepare the Cable

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Train the cable into position and cut it to the required length. Prepare the cable by removing the jacket, insulation, and semi-con layers according to the dimensions specified in Table 1, allowing for terminal lug depth and additional exposed conductor distance for crimping growth.

  2. Install the Ground Braid

Carefully wrap one band of sealing mastic around the cable jacket 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end. Position the preformed high-amp ground braid with the 'U' section over the metallic shield, adjacent to the jacket edge, and secure one tail over the jacket with vinyl tape, pressing the solder block into the mastic. Wrap the ground braid around the metallic shield, secure it with the constant force spring, and cinch the spring. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the spring and exposed metallic shield, leaving 1 inch (25mm) of semi-con insulation exposed. Apply a second mastic strip over the solder block and previous mastic, then wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape over this mastic seal and the previously applied tape to secure the ground braids.

  3. Install the Lug or Connector

Ensure the termination assembly fits over the selected lug. If the lug will not fit through the termination core, clean the insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core at this time). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's directions, leaving the last 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch uncrimped. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings after crimping.

  4. Clean Cable Insulation and Lug

Wipe the cable insulation with solvent-saturated pads, ensuring solvent does not touch the semi-con insulation shield. If abrasive must be used, apply only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation, being careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below that allowed by the kit.

  5. Install the Termination Body

Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping gray silicone rubber electrical tape around the base of the terminal lug, adjusting layers based on barrel diameter. Cover the edge of the semi-con insulation shield with a liberal coating of silicone grease to fill the step. For lower terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top until it is flush with the bottom of the termination. Slide the termination body onto the cable, align it with the forward edge of the mastic seal, and carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise. Do not push or pull the termination assembly during core removal.

  6. Complete Sealing and Grounding

Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area (avoiding skirt tabs), then carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber electrical tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Connect both ground braids to the system ground. Confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
