How to Install the R2T28J2 Cable Termination
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the R2T28J2 Ranger 2 Cable Termination for 28kV indoor/outdoor applications on concentric and jacketed concentric neutral cables. Ensure all safety precautions are followed.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Approved solvent, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer, optional)
Supplies needed:
Silicone Rubber Termination (kit contents), Silicone Lubricant, Grey Silicone Rubber Tape, Sealing Mastic, Gloves, Connector (optional, but typically required), Cable Support Bracket (optional), Vinyl tape or binding wire, Silicone grease
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation. Verify the cable size is compatible with the R2T28J2 kit. Train the cable into position and cut it to the required length, allowing sufficient neutral wire length for grounding. Prepare the cable according to the specified dimensions: 10.5 inches (270mm) for Dimension A (insulation shield cutback), 2 inches (50mm) for the cable jacket, and account for terminal lug depth plus additional exposed conductor distance for aluminum lugs (e.g., 2-1/4 inches or 57mm for barrel depth plus 'X' for growth). Using 50% stretch, wrap one band of sealing mastic around the cable jacket 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end, cutting it flush without overlap. This mastic also serves as a marker. Bend the neutral wires back over the mastic and press them in. Secure the neutral wires to the cable jacket 4-6 inches (100-150mm) from the cut edge using vinyl tape or binding wire. Apply a second mastic band over the neutral wires and the previously applied mastic, using 50% stretch and cutting flush. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal, carefully maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension.
- Install the Lug or Connector
If using a lug that does not fit through the termination core, clean the cable insulation and slide the termination body onto the cable before installing the lug. Do not remove the core at this stage. Position the connector or lug onto the prepared conductor and crimp it according to the manufacturer's directions. IMPORTANT: Do not crimp the last 1/4 to 3/8 inch of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent. CAUTION: Do not allow the solvent to touch the semi-con insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use it only on the insulation, not on the semi-con insulation shield. Use only aluminum oxide abrasive, grit 120 or finer, and be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the kit's allowed range.
- Install the Termination Body
IMPORTANT: Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping a band of gray silicone rubber tape (from the kit) around the base of the terminal lug. If the barrel diameter is equal to or greater than the cable primary insulation, use no more than two layers. If the barrel diameter is smaller, build up the tape band to equal the insulation diameter. Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease to the edge of the semi-con insulation shield to fill the step at the semi-con cut-off. For terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until the core is flush with the bottom of the termination. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning the terminator with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, starting with the loose end. Ensure the termination body, not the core, is butted up to the leading edge of the mastic seal. CAUTION: Do not push or pull on the termination assembly while removing the core material. Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, but do not lubricate the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber tape. Overlap the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extend the tape wrapping over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration.
- Ground and Final Check
Twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect them securely to the system ground. Confirm that the High-K step (the overlap of the termination insulator over the cable semi-con) does not exceed 1.5 inches.
