How to Install the R2T28J2 Ranger 2 Cable Termination
This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe and proper installation of the R2T28J2 Ranger 2 Cable Termination for 28kV indoor/outdoor applications, covering cable preparation, lug installation, cleaning, and termination sealing for concentric and jacketed concentric neutral cables.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Crimping tool, Wire strippers, Measuring tape, Gloves, Approved solvent, Aluminum oxide abrasive (optional, grit 120 or finer)
Supplies needed:
R2T28J2 Ranger 2 Cable Termination kit (includes silicone rubber termination, lubricant, silicone rubber tape, sealing mastic, gloves), Terminal lug or connector, Cable (concentric or jacketed concentric neutral), Vinyl tape, Binding wire (optional)
- Prepare the Cable
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety. Failure to follow instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury. First, check that the cable size fits within the kit's specified range. Train the cable into position and cut it to the required length, allowing sufficient neutral wire length for grounding connections. Prepare the cable jacket, mastic, and semi-con insulation shield to the specified dimensions, allowing for the depth of the terminal lug. For concentric neutral cables, bend the neutral wires back and secure them as instructed. Apply one band of sealing mastic around the cable jacket 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end, using 50% stretch; cut flush without overlapping. Bend the neutral wires back over and press them into the mastic, securing them to the cable jacket 4-6 inches (100-150mm) from the cut edge using vinyl tape or binding wire. Apply a second mastic band over the neutral wires and the previously applied mastic, again using 50% stretch and cutting flush. Finally, wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal, carefully maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension.
- Install the Terminal Lug or Connector
If using a terminal lug or connector that will not fit through the termination core, clean the cable insulation and slide the termination body onto the cable before installing the lug; do not remove the core at this time. Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's directions, ensuring not to crimp the last 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, taking care not to allow the solvent to touch the semi-con insulation shield. If an abrasive must be used, apply it only to the insulation (not the semi-con insulation shield) and use only aluminum oxide abrasive, grit 120 or finer. Be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below that allowed by the kit.
- Install the Termination Body
Create a track-resistant moisture seal between the termination insulator and the lug/connector using the gray silicone rubber tape provided in the kit. Wrap a band of silicone tape around the base of the terminal lug; if the barrel diameter is equal to or greater than the cable primary insulation, the tape band should not exceed two layers. If the barrel diameter is smaller than the cable primary insulation, use the tape strip to form a tape band equal to the insulation diameter. Cover the edge of the semi-con insulation shield with a liberal coating of silicone grease to fill the step at the semi-con cut-off. For lower terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until the core is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning the terminator with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully begin to remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, starting with the loose end. Ensure the termination body, not the core, is butted up to the leading edge of the mastic seal. Do not push or pull on the termination assembly while removing the core material.
- Complete Sealing and Grounding
Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, but do not lubricate the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. With the termination installed, complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber tape. Overlap the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extend the tape wrapping over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect them to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
