How to Install the R2T28M2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination for Tape Shielded Cables
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and correct installation of the R2T28M2 28kV Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination on tape shielded cables, including cable preparation, ground braid installation, lug connection, and termination placement. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable preparation tools (knife, wire strippers), Crimping tool, Measuring tape/ruler, Approved solvent, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer)
Supplies needed:
R2T28M2 Silicone Rubber Termination kit (includes termination, lubricant, gray silicone rubber tape, constant force spring, preformed ground braid, sealing mastic, copper foil tape, gloves), Terminal lug/connector (appropriate for cable), Vinyl electrical tape
- Prepare the Cable
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. First, check that the cable size fits within the insulation range specified in the Termination Selection Chart. Train the cable into position and cut it to the required length. Prepare the cable by removing the jacket and semi-conductive layer according to the dimensions provided in Table 1 and allowing for terminal lug depth plus growth allowance. Secure the edge of the tape shield with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape to prevent unrolling.
- Install the Ground Braid
Carefully wrap one band of mastic around the cable jacket 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end, using 50% stretch and cutting flush without overlap. Position the preformed ground braid with its short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the mastic strip. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket using vinyl tape and press the solder block firmly into the mastic. Apply a second mastic band over the solder block and previous mastic, maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal. Finally, wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield one complete wrap, trim any excess to prevent overlap, and secure it in place with the constant force spring, wrapping the spring in the same direction as the braid. Cinch the spring after the final winding and secure it with two wraps of vinyl tape.
- Install the Lug or Connector
Before proceeding, check to ensure the termination assembly will fit over the selected lug. If it does not, clean the insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core at this stage). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer’s directions, ensuring not to crimp the last 3/8 to 1/2 inch of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings and edges.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation thoroughly with an approved solvent, being careful not to allow the solvent to touch the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation, never on the semi-conductive shield. Exercise caution to avoid reducing the cable insulation diameter below the kit's allowed specifications.
- Install the Termination Body
Create a track-resistant moisture seal between the termination insulator and the lug/connector by wrapping a band of the supplied gray silicone rubber electrical tape around the base of the terminal lug. The number of layers depends on the barrel diameter relative to the cable primary insulation. Liberally coat the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield with silicone grease to fill the step. For terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top until it is flush with the bottom of the termination. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, starting with the loose end. Ensure the termination body, not the core, is butted against the leading edge of the mastic seal. Continue removing the core without pushing or pulling on the termination assembly.
- Complete Sealing and Grounding
Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, but avoid lubricating the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber electrical tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending the tape wrapping over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Connect the ground braid securely to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
