How to Install the R2IT15M 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination for Tape Shielded Cables
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the indoor installation of the R2IT15M 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination on tape shielded cables, covering cable preparation, ground braid installation, and termination placement.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable preparation tools, Crimping tool, Solvent saturated pads, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer), Measuring tape or ruler
Supplies needed:
R2IT15M 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination Kit (includes termination, preformed ground braid, constant force spring, silicone lubricant, copper foil tape, gloves), Terminal lug or connector, Vinyl electrical tape, Solvent, Oxide inhibitor
- Prepare the Cable
WARNING: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Inspect all parts for damage and compatibility. First, verify the cable size fits within the insulation range specified in the Termination Selection Chart. Train the cable into its final position and cut it to the required length. Prepare the cable according to the dimensions provided in the instructions, ensuring to account for the depth of the terminal lug and any growth allowance for aluminum lugs. To prevent the tape shield from unrolling, secure its edge with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape.
- Install the Ground Braid
Carefully wrap one band of vinyl tape around the cable jacket 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end; this serves as a marker. Position the preformed ground braid with its short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the vinyl tape strip. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket using vinyl tape. Apply a second vinyl tape band directly over the original tape marker and ground braid solder block, maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield one complete wrap, trim any excess to prevent overlap, and secure it in place with the constant force spring, wrapping the spring in the same direction as the ground braid. Cinch (tighten) the spring after wrapping the final winding, then secure the spring with two wraps of vinyl tape.
- Install the Lug or Connector
Before proceeding, check to ensure the termination assembly will fit over the selected lug. If the lug will not fit through the termination core, clean the insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug, but do not remove the core at this time. Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer’s directions, ensuring not to crimp the last 3/8 to 1/2 inch of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings or edges.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation thoroughly with solvent-saturated pads. Exercise caution to prevent the solvent from touching the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use it only on the insulation and ensure it is aluminum oxide abrasive, grit 120 or finer. Be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the specifications allowed by the kit.
- Install the Termination
Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease to the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield; this silicone will fill the step at the semi-con cut-off. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning its edge with the forward edge of the vinyl tape marker. Carefully begin to remove the core by pulling counter-clockwise. Recheck the termination position and continue to remove the core. Do not push or pull on the termination assembly while removing the core. Finally, connect the ground braid to the system ground.
