How to Install the R2IT15M4 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the indoor installation of the 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination for tape shielded cables, including cable preparation, ground braid installation, lug connection, cleaning, and termination body installation. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before starting.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Solvent (with pads), Aluminum oxide abrasive (120 grit or finer)
Supplies needed:
R2IT15M4 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination kit, Preformed Ground Braid, Constant Force Spring, Silicone Lubricant (grease), 1-Strip Copper Foil Tape, Gloves, Vinyl Tape, Terminal Lug (Aluminum), Oxide inhibitor
- Prepare the Cable
Verify the cable size fits within the insulation range specified in the Termination Selection Chart. Train the cable into position and cut it to the required length, allowing for the depth of the terminal lug and additional exposed conductor distance for aluminum lug growth (1/4" for 2/0-350, 1/2" for 400-650, 3/4" for 750-1000). Remove the cable jacket for 9-1/4" (235mm) and the semi-con insulation shield for 3/4" (19mm). To prevent the tape shield from unrolling, hold down its edge with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape.
- Install the Ground Braid
Carefully wrap one band of vinyl tape around the cable jacket 1/4" (6mm) from the jacket end; this serves as a marker. Position the preformed ground braid with the short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the vinyl tape strip. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket using vinyl tape. Apply a second vinyl tape band directly over the original tape marker and ground braid solder block, maintaining the 1/4" (6mm) dimension. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield for one complete wrap, trim any excess to prevent overlap, and secure it in place with the constant force spring, wrapping the spring in the same direction as the ground braid. Cinch (tighten) the spring after the final winding. Secure the spring with two wraps of vinyl tape.
- Install the Lug or Connector
Check to ensure the termination assembly fits over the selected lug. If the lug will not fit through the termination core, clean the insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core at this time). Position the connector/lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer’s directions, ensuring not to crimp the last 3/8” to 1/2” of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings or edges.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation with solvent-saturated pads, taking care not to allow the solvent to touch the semi-con insulation shield. If abrasive material must be used, apply it only on the insulation, not on the semi-con insulation shield. Use only aluminum oxide abrasive, grit 120 or finer, and be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below that allowed by the kit.
- Install the Termination Body
Cover the edge of the semi-con insulation shield with a liberal coating of silicone grease; this silicone will fill the step at the semi-con cut-off. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning its edge with the forward edge of the vinyl tape marker. Carefully begin to remove the core by pulling counter-clockwise. Recheck the termination position and continue to remove the core. Do not push or pull on the termination assembly while removing the core. Finally, connect the ground braid to the system ground.
