Overview

The ABB K656L2-M0380 15/25kV 600A 2-Way Deadbreak L-Kit with Test Point is a fully rated, fully shielded, and fully submersible solution for medium-voltage cable terminations in critical electrical infrastructure. This kit consists of two K656LR elbow connectors, two K650BIP basic insulating plugs, and one K651CP connecting plug, enabling dual cable terminations with built-in test point access for capacitive voltage testing without service interruption. Designed for 15kV and 25kV voltage classes, the K656L2-M0380 meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 with ratings including 8.3kV max phase-to-ground and 14.4kV max phase-to-phase for 15kV class, and 16.2kV max phase-to-ground and 28kV max phase-to-phase for 25kV class. The kit delivers 600A continuous current with 25kA symmetrical momentary rating over 10 cycles. Impulse withstand ratings are 95kV BIL for 15kV and 140kV BIL for 25kV, while AC withstand ratings are 34kV for 15kV and 45kV for 25kV. Corona extinction sensitivity is 3pC at 11kV for 15kV and 21.5kV for 25kV. The fully molded rubber housing is 100% peroxide-cured EPDM, providing submersible and corrosion-resistant performance. The kit supports cable insulation diameters from 1.370 inch to 1.630 inch and accommodates compressed stranded conductors up to 700/750 kcmil or compacted solid conductors up to 900 kcmil. Installation requires only standard hand tools and is performed in a de-energized state for safety. Applications include switchgear, transformers, and distribution panels where dual terminations and test point access are required. The deadbreak design allows hot-stick operation for safe connection and disconnection under load, while the shielded construction ensures reliable performance in harsh environments. The aluminum compression lug provides low-resistance, vibration-resistant connections critical for high-current systems. This kit is part of the ABB K656L series, engineered for medium-voltage systems requiring dependable, maintenance-friendly terminations.

How to Install the 600/900 Series Deadbreak Connecting Plug

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 600/900 series deadbreak connecting plug. Installation must only be performed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal to prevent serious or fatal injury.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

3/8 inch hex bit socket, Torque wrench, 600ATM

Supplies needed:

Connecting Plug, Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent

  1. Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety

Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. Inspect the connecting plug and its mating parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility. If the product came with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Install the Stud

If the mating plug device (such as an elbow, bushing extender, vault stretcher, or elbow end module) is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the stud into the mating plug device. Ensure the stud is threaded in until the start of the flats are below the contact surface.

  3. Clean and Lubricate Components

Clean both the connecting plug and its mating part as indicated in the diagram. Lubricate the connecting plug, the stud, and the mating part (elbow, bushing extender, vault stretcher, or elbow end module) with the lubricant supplied. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE this lubricant, as other lubricants may be harmful to the products. Be sure to keep all surfaces clean during this process.

  4. Connect and Torque the Plug

Push the connecting plug into the mating part (elbow, bushing extender, vault stretcher, or elbow end module) and engage the threads. Hold the contact of the connecting plug firmly against the contact surface of the mating part. Using a 600ATM or a 3/8 inch hex bit socket and a torque wrench, tighten the connection exerting 50 to 60 foot-pounds (68 to 81 newton-meters) of torque.

  5. Ground the Connecting Plug (If Applicable)

If applicable, insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the connecting plug. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect the other end of the wire to a suitable ground.
