How to Install the 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Vinyl tape (if applicable), Conductive copper tape (if applicable), Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Insulated cap(s) or connector(s)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Inspect Components

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety practices. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Termination

Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Based on your cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), prepare the cable by cutting it squarely at the bushing centerline and removing the outer jacket, shield, or tape as specified in the product documentation (e.g., 9-5/8" (240mm) for jacketed cables). Unwrap and manage neutral or drain wires, or wrap conductive copper tape as required. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable now.

  3. Prepare Cable Insulation and Install Compression Lug

Remove 2-1/8" (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor, and align its threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove 6-7/8" (175mm) of the insulation shield and bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8" (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all dirt or inhibitor traces.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied probe wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Ground the Elbow and Connect Neutrals

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, follow its specific instructions.

  6. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug

DANGER: Re-confirm that both the transformer and the elbow are de-energized before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2" (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.

  7. Perform Voltage Test (Optional)

If the connector is equipped with a capacitance test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean the inside of the cap, lubricate with silicone lubricant, and replace it on the test point.
