How to Install the K656CHSL-HP Disconnectable Splice with Sacrificial Cap
Installation guide for mounting and wiring the K656CHSL-HP disconnectable splice with sacrificial cap. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Hydraulic cutting and grounded tool, Hex wrench, Torque wrench with 15/16” socket, Hotstick, Sensing device for voltage testing, Rag, Approved safety solvent
Supplies needed:
Sacrificial Cap, Lubricant, Mounting screws, Flat washer, Belleville washer, Hex-head bolt, Nylon venting rod, 14 AWG copper wire, Tape
- Prepare the cable end
Cut the cable end square and wipe the outer jacket clean 38 inches from the cut end. If using an ECS grounding device, slide the tube onto the cable 38 inches from the cut end.
- Install the receptacle housing
Slide the receptacle housing onto the cable 30 inches from the cut end.
- Prepare cable insulation
Refer to the special cable preparation supplement for your specific cable type (jacketed concentric neutral or flat metallic tape shielded). Follow the provided procedure for preparing the cable insulation, including removing insulation shield and beveling the insulation end.
- Clean and lubricate cable adapter
Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all semi-conducting residue using a rag soaked with an approved safety solvent. Apply supplied lubricant sparingly along the cable and to the inside of the cable adapter. Slide the adapter, small end first, over the cable with a twisting motion until its end is flush with the tape marker.
- Prepare conductor and assemble retaining rings
Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter, ensuring a bare conductor length of 4 3/4” to 5”. Assemble aluminum retaining rings over the conductor and tighten the socket head screw hand tight. Measure the exposed conductor to confirm it is within the range of 4 3/8” to 4 3/4”.
- Install and crimp connector
Remove the protective cap from the crimp connector. If using aluminum cable, wire brush the conductor and insert it into the crimp connector containing inhibitor. Ensure the conductor is fully inserted. Check that the bolt holes in the crimp connectors align with the mating part. Crimp the connectors following the instructions provided with them, rotating each crimp 90 or 180 degrees. After crimping, measure the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar; it should be 6 3/4” to 7”.
- Repeat for additional cables
Repeat steps 3 through 6 for any remaining cables that need to be joined.
- Assemble and tighten bolts
Assemble the washers and bolt in the order: flat washer against spade contact, Belleville washer (concave side down), and hex-head bolt. Hand tighten all bolts. Using a torque wrench with a 15/16” socket, tighten all bolts to 50 to 60 ft. lbs. Do not attempt to move any part of the assembly after tightening.
- Lubricate and slide receptacle housing
Apply supplied lubricant generously to the outside of the cable adapter, the splice section, and the inside mating surface of the receptacle housing. Slide the receptacle housing over the cable adapter and up to the indicated position. Insert the nylon venting rod.
- Install sacrificial cap
Remove the protective shipping cap from the sacrificial cap. Clean the male interface and lubricate both the interface and the inside of the cap. Install the new sacrificial cap by rotating it clockwise 9 to 10 turns until it stops. Ensure the gap between the cap and the splice shoulder is 1/8” or less.
- Connect grounding wire
Attach a short length of 14 AWG copper wire to the grounding eye of the sacrificial cap and tighten by twisting. Connect this wire directly to the system's ground, keeping it snug.
- Perform voltage test
Use a hotstick to remove the test point cap by peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap and replace it on the test point.
