How to Install K655/K656CCP Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of K655/K656CCP Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on 15kV or 25kV class systems, including cable preparation, connection, and grounding.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire brush, 600 ATM assembly tool, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device, Crimping tool, Torque wrench

Supplies needed:

K655/K656CCP Elbow Connector kit (Elbow, Cable Adapter, Connector, Stud, Compression Lug, Lubricant), Vinyl plastic tape, Tape retainer, Tape marker, Wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper), Suitable connector for grounding, Silicone grease, Waterproofing material

  1. De-energize Apparatus and Position Cable

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Position the cable in its final assembled position with enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.

  2. Prepare Cable Outer Jacket and Shield

Clean the outer surface of the cable for 24” (610mm) or up to the bent-back concentric neutral wires. Remove the outer jacket to the specified dimension (12 3/4” or 324mm). Prepare the cable shield by folding back wires, removing tape shields (securing with vinyl tape if flat metallic), or removing corrugated/semi-con shields (installing tape retainer/marker as needed). WARNING: Do not cut or nick the cable insulation when removing the semi-con shield.

  3. Install Cable Adapter

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, always working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.

  4. Prepare Conductor and Install Compression Lug

Remove the protruding cable insulation, cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Ensure the exposed conductor length is 4 3/8”–4 11/16” (111mm–119mm). For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it. Measure the "Check Dimension" (less than 6 1/2” or 165mm) before crimping. Crimp the compression lug according to supplied instructions. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter. Verify the distance from the lug end to the cable adapter is 6 1/2”–7 1/4” (165mm–184mm).

  5. Install Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.

  6. Connect to Mating Product

WARNING: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. Install the stud into the mating part. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, keeping surfaces clean. Push the elbow onto the mating part. Using the 600 ATM assembly tool, thread the connector into the mating part until it bottoms. Apply 50 to 60 foot-pounds of torque.

  7. Ground the Cable Shield

Insert one end of a wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to make a small loop. Do not damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. Ensure the cable shield is grounded according to the instructions supplied with any grounding device, or through an alternate method if no device is used. It is recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.

  8. Install Mating Connector (if applicable)

Clean and lubricate the entire male interface and the appropriate DR(G), GLR, or LR connector of the correct voltage class with the supplied or approved lubricant. Install the DR(G), GLR, or LR to the bushing interface following their respective instructions.

  9. Perform Voltage Test (K656CCP Only)

If using a K656CCP, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points. Contamination or incorrect equipment can give a false "no voltage" indication. Treat the elbow as energized until the "no voltage" indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
