How to Install 161LRJS/162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial connection of 161LRJS and 162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors with jacket seals to UD cable and mating bushing devices.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant, Sealing strips (mastic), Vinyl tape, Jumper or grounding braid, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Silicone lubricant (for test point cap)

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Checks

Check package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Check threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, inspect for damage and replace components. Read the entire installation instructions before starting and ensure all required tools are at hand, maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit.

  3. Train Cable and Prepare Neutral Wires

Train the UD cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Provide an extra length of concentric neutral wires or grounding braid (24-26 inches beyond the bushing centerline) to facilitate connection to the tank ground and hotstick operation. Unwrap neutral wires past the bushing centerline and cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline.

  4. Prepare Cable Jacket with Mastic and Tape

Using the cable cut-back template for dimensional guidance, wrap one strip of mastic, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic. Wrap a second strip of mastic completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip if needed to build up the outer diameter. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape.

  5. Prepare Cable Insulation and Conductor

Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  6. Lubricate and Slide Elbow Housing

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant.

  7. Align Elbow and Install Probe

Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  8. Seal Concentric Neutral Area

Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs and/or rolling the seal down.

  9. Connect Neutral Wires to Ground

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.

  10. Lubricate Mating Parts (if de-energized)

DANGER: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing ONLY IF the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized.

  11. Connect Elbow to Bushing

Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Confirm positive control of the elbow connector. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT HOLD IN THE PARTIALLY INSERTED POSITION.

  12. Perform Voltage Test (Optional for 162LRJS)

If using a 162LRJS connector with an integral capacitance test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Test with a suitable sensing device made for capacitive test points. Treat the elbow as energized until the "no voltage" indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or wrong equipment can give false readings. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
