How to Install the 600/900 Series Deadbreak Connecting Plug

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and connection of the 600/900 series deadbreak connecting plug with compatible mating parts. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning any work.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Torque wrench, 600ATM or 3/8” hex bit socket, Cleaning supplies (e.g., lint-free cloth)

Supplies needed:

600/900 Series Deadbreak Connecting Plug, Lubricant (supplied with plug, DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire (if applicable), Mating plug device (e.g., elbow, bushing extender, vault stretcher, elbow end module)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Inspect Parts

DANGER: De-energize all apparatus in the work area before beginning installation or removal of any parts. Inspect the connecting plug and all mating parts for any damage, verify their correct rating, and confirm compatibility. Check the package contents to ensure all components are complete and undamaged. Have all required tools readily available and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Install the Stud (If Applicable)

If the mating plug device (such as an elbow, bushing extender, vault stretcher, or elbow end module) is not already equipped with a stud, hand tighten the stud into the mating plug device. Continue threading the stud until the start of its flats are positioned below the contact surface.

  3. Clean and Lubricate Components

Thoroughly clean both the connecting plug and its mating part as indicated in the product documentation. Apply the lubricant supplied with the connecting plug to both parts. It is critical to DO NOT SUBSTITUTE this lubricant, as other lubricants may be harmful to the products. Ensure all surfaces of the elbow and mating parts remain clean during this process.

  4. Connect and Torque the Plug

Push the connecting plug firmly into the mating part (elbow, bushing extender, vault stretcher, or elbow end module) and engage the threads. Hold the contact of the connecting plug securely against the contact surface of the mating part. Using a torque wrench fitted with a 600ATM or a 3/8” hex bit socket, tighten the connection to a torque of 50 to 60 foot-pounds (68 to 81 newton-meters).

  5. Ground the Connecting Plug (If Applicable)

If grounding is required for your application, insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or an equivalent conductor through the grounding eye located on the connecting plug. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the grounding eye. Connect the other end of the wire securely to an appropriate ground point.
