How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug
This guide details the installation of the K151SP Straight Plug for connecting solid dielectric cables on 15kV and 25kV class systems. DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before installation. Installation must be performed by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety practices. A bailing arrangement is required with mating Elastimold deadbreak products.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Crimp tool, Rag, Approved solvent
Supplies needed:
K151SP Straight Plug (kit includes: Conductor Contact (female), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant), Cable (solid dielectric type), #14 AWG copper wire, Silicone grease
- Prepare Cable Jacket and Shield
For Jacketed Concentric Neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end. For Copper Tape Shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the cable end.
- Prepare Cable Insulation and Conductor
Remove 7/8 inch to 1 inch (or 1-3/4 inches to 1-7/8 inches for #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield. Cut squarely, do not pencil. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert them into the crimp barrel, which contains inhibitor.
- Crimp Socket Terminal
Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Start crimps at the crimp line imprinted on the crimp barrel and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare Semi-Conductive Shield and Clean Insulation
Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield 7-3/4 inches to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut, ensuring not to cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved solvent, wiping from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue.
- Lubricate Cable and Housing
Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto each cable. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown and to the inside of the housing. Do not substitute other lubricants, as they may be harmful to this product or its mating product.
- Install Cable into Plug Housing
Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), taking care to ensure the rod is not cut. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with an ELASTIMOLD bail, referencing the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4).
- Connect Grounding (if applicable)
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14 AWG or equivalent copper wire through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
