How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing the cable, assembling the K151SP Straight Plug, and connecting it to a mating receptacle or apparatus on 15kV and 25kV class systems. All apparatus must be de-energized during installation.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Rag, Approved solvent
Supplies needed:
K151SP Straight Plug (includes conductor contact, nylon venting rod, lubricant), Solid dielectric type cable, Silicone grease, Elastimold bail (or bailing arrangement), #14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent), HV insulated caps or connectors (if replacing shipping covers)
- Prepare Cable Jacket and Shield
De-energize all apparatus before beginning installation. For jacketed concentric neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, ensuring sufficient concentric neutral wires for grounding. For copper tape shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cable.
- Prepare Conductor and Crimp Terminal
Remove 7/8 to 1 inch (or 1-3/4 to 1-7/8 inches for #1 and #1/0 solid/larger aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield, cutting squarely. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert into the crimp barrel. Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, starting at the crimp line and rotating each successive crimp 90 degrees. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare Semi-Conductive Shield and Insulation
Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield 7-3/4 to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut, avoiding nicks to the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and insulation thoroughly with a rag wet with an approved solvent, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket.
- Lubricate and Install Collar and Cable
Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto the cable. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable and to the inside of the housing; do not substitute lubricants. Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), ensuring the rod is not cut. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection using an ELASTIMOLD bail, referencing the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4).
- Ground the Connector (Optional)
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not used, connect a length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
