How to Install the 167LRT Loadbreak Bushing Tap
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 167LRT Loadbreak Bushing Tap, designed to terminate UD cable with concentric neutral and semi-con shielding, and provide an operating interface for 15kV class loadbreak elbow or accessory devices.
Estimated time: 1h 15m
Tools needed:
Wrenches, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Installation Tool
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), UD cable (concentric neutral and semi-con shielding), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate grounding connector, 15kV class loadbreak elbow, insulated cap, or grounding elbow connector
- Observe Safety Precautions
Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts before proceeding. Maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Train the Cable
Train the UD cable as shown in the documentation to ease future operation. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches beyond the end of the cable.
- Prepare the Cable End
Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the cable end. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off excessive inhibitor. Remove the semi-con shield as shown and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Bushing Well Contact
Thread the well contact onto the bushing well stud by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Tighten with a wrench until the wrench bends, signifying the proper assembly torque has been reached.
- Assemble the Bushing Tap
Remove the protective cap from the bushing tap and retrieve the socket contact stored inside. Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the bushing housing with the supplied lubricant only; do not substitute. Slide the bushing tap onto the cable with a back and forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess grease. Align the bushing with the compression lug hole and assemble the socket contact into the bushing tap, ensuring the socket contact stud passes through the lug hole.
- Lubricate and Mount the Bushing Tap
Inspect the apparatus bushing well to ensure it is dry and free from all contaminants. Lubricate the bushing well interface area of the bushing tap with the supplied lubricant or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricants. Place the lubricated bushing tap into the apparatus bushing well. Insert the installation tool into the bore of the bushing tap until fully seated. Insert a wrench through the wrench hole of the tool and turn in a clockwise direction until the wrench bends, indicating proper assembly torque. Remove the wrench and installation tool.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the bushing tap and twist it tight, being careful not to damage the eye. Twist the neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector.
- Prepare for Mating Product Installation
Thoroughly wipe the bushing tap interface clean of any contaminants and apply a light, uniform coat of the supplied lubricant, working it thoroughly into the surface. CAUTION: Excess lubricant may prevent a loadbreak elbow from being fully seated in the “locked on” position. Install mating products (e.g., loadbreak elbow, insulated cap, or grounding elbow) following their specific instructions. If not immediately mating, replace the shipping cap. Do not energize or submerge the apparatus with the shipping cap, as it is for protection only and not insulated or watertight.
