How to Install Thomas & Betts FLOOD-SEAL® 95 Heat Shrink Connector Kits
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Thomas & Betts FLOOD-SEAL® 95 Heat Shrink Connector Kits, ensuring a secure and sealed electrical connection for various conductor sizes. Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable codes and safety rules.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Wrench or socket, Butane torch, Propane torch, 500°F electric heat gun
Supplies needed:
FLOOD-SEAL® 95 Heat Shrink Connector Kit, Electrical cable, Joint compound
- Prepare the Conductor
Remove the cable insulation to the appropriate length for the lug. Thoroughly wire brush the conductor end to ensure a clean connection surface.
- Position Heat Shrink Sleeve
Slip the heat shrink sleeve, provided in the kit, over the cable end. Ensure it is far enough back to allow for proper lug crimping and connection.
- Crimp and Bolt the Lug
Crimp the lug securely onto the prepared conductor end. Wipe away any excess joint compound from the crimped area. Bolt the lug firmly to the contact pad on the FLOOD-SEAL connector bus.
- Position Sleeve over Lug
Slide the heat shrink sleeve forward over the lug until it firmly butts against the connector bus.
- Shrink Sleeve at Bus End
Using a suitable heat source (butane torch, propane torch, or 500°F electric heat gun), begin shrinking the sleeve at the bus end. Apply heat evenly. The seal is complete when a bead of mastic appears at the sleeve end.
- Shrink Sleeve over Terminal Lug
Continue shrinking the sleeve, working away from the connector bus, over the terminal lug. Apply heat evenly until the sleeve is fully conformed to the lug.
- Shrink Sleeve over Cable End
Finally, shrink the sleeve over the cable end. Apply heat evenly. A complete seal is indicated when a bead of mastic appears at this end of the sleeve.
